I purchased the eVault eV600 (not from amazon.com) to keep my defense handgun close by but out of reach of my children. I would have given it great reviews up till a couple of months ago.

The electronic unlocking mechanism quit working shortly after Christmas 09 (one month after the warranty expired). It just made a strange whirring noise when the combination was entered. I sent a polite email to Winchester through the product support link on their website, asking if they would honor the warranty and if not, could they provide information on how to have it repaired even if it was at my expense.

Winchester has not responded to this day (3-30-10), despite two more email attempts.

After waiting months and hearing nothing from Winchester, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I have repaired copy machines and other small electro-mechanical devices for the last 14 years, so I'm not afraid to take things apart (what did I have to loose? it already didn't work).

When you enter the correct combination on the keypad, a small electric motor starts spinning. This motor takes up the slack in a very thin stranded wire. The other end of this thin wire is attached to the latch mechanism. So... it winds up and literally snatches the lock open. While the latch is momentarily in this retracted position, the springs on the door hinge swing the door open before the whole motor/wire/latch assembly rebounds. Mine had failed because the wire was frayed and broken, not on the ends where you might expect a weakening due to the crimps that hold both ends in place but mine was frayed and broken right in the middle.

I was amazed at how cheaply built it was. It really gave me pause to think that I had been trusting my family's life to something so flimsy.

Well done. Crisp buttons, plenty of options and settings, tight construction. Perhaps one design choice that could be a turn off is the 'sleep' feature of the keypad: You need to press a button and wait a beat for the display to 'wake' before you enter your code. Doesn't bother me, but I'll bet it ticks someone off out there.... While the GunVaults are billed as featuring 'no eyes' keypad operation this one accomplishes that nicely as well with its chunky buttons-- in fact I can find my code more easily with this one (I own both brands of safe) .All around a great safe.

Update on 8-1-2010. Safe is still going strong, beeped at me that it was time for a battery change today. Made me realize I should write in a quick update to re-emphasize my earlier positive review: This is a great little safe. It's a part-time stash for a carry pistol, full-time 'Oh @#*t' safe and I feel confident it's going to work when I need it, every time. Not sure how or why this safe seems a bit unknown, but the Winchester is a more well executed product than most in its class and I'd happily choose it over the rest. Ahem Gunvault.

I purchased this product just prior to moving overseas. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I didn't lay eyes on it again for a year, at which point the warranty had expired before I even used it. For nine months it worked flawlessly until I began to hear the same sound posted by another customer, "a strange whirring noise when the combination was entered". When I enter the combination I can see and hear my entries, but the door will not open electronically. From this point on I have had to use one of the supplied metal keys to gain entry. If I had wanted a metal key operated safe, at a much cheaper cost, I would have bought one. What I wanted was quick access to my handguns, even in the dark, but now am not receiving this. I had expected a product made from Winchester to work flawlessly for years to come. But 9 months, what a joke. I searched the fact menu on Winchester's site for a solution and it simply says to insure you're using an Energizer alkaline battery and to change it if the door will not open. The eVault 600 comes with the ability to be operated by both DC power and independent battery power. But the battery is really for times when there is no DC power, which enables you "quick" access to your valuable, e.g. GUNS, when you need them. I will have to look and see if my issue is a "cable" issue like other owners.

As usual this product failed just after the warranty expired. The only reason I bought it was for the quick entry electronic opening which is what failed. Now all I can use it for is a keyed safe for small items and I will have to buy a better product for my guns. I tried to email and call customer service with no response. I paid $130 for it. I wasted my $. Don't waste yours.
