After being given this much loved book when I was 7 years old, I read it many times during the intervening 22 years. It disappeared from my memory for a few years, until when in my early 20's my brother died. Watching the sky that night a friend made the comment that my brother was up amongst the stars now ...which brought the book back into my memory.
It was a great comfort to me during the loss of my brother (as we'd both read it as youngsters). Apart from being a beautiful story, "The Wind Between the Stars" maybe a useful tool in helping children (and adults) deal with the loss of someone close to them.

Margaret Mahy is a top class children's author, and The Wind Between the Stars is my personal favourite of her many picture books. It has that otherworldly quality which makes it stay with you, and is wonderfully illustrated by Brian Froud. It's a real shame that it is out of print.

The book is the story of Phoebe, and her encounters with 'the wind between the stars', which three times tries to entice her on its travels around the world and off again. Read it. Love it. Share it with little people when they've been good. I couldn't recommend it more wholeheartedly.

I read this story back in the '70s when it was published in Cricket Magazine, and it's stayed with me all the years since, due in part to the tale and part to the illustrations. This is Mahy at her sweet-aching, heart-opening best, and Froud's illustrations are more "Are All the Giants Dead?" than the Labyrinth's goblins.

I won't spoil the story, but it's about the choice between practicality and joy, between responsibility and dream. And nowhere along the way can one say Phoebe's choice was wrong...

If you don't have deep pockets, the story is available in "The Door in the Air and Other Tales", though the illustrations are nowhere near as lovely.
