an unexpected masterpiece,
By
This review is from: Wind from Carolina (Ltd) (Library Binding)
As my eyes were scanning the final sentences of this epic tale, I somberly realized that I was at the last moments of saying goodbye to a new friend, wishing that we had just a few more minutes together. I whimsically bought this book, having never heard of it and without reading any review. Immediatley, I experienced that feeling of pleasant surprize as I held in my hand a treasure I had accidently unearthed. The characters are superbly developed and subliminally creep into your thoughts hours after you put the book down and as you go about your daily affairs. You wonder what Bahama and David will do next, or what spellbinding adventure Juan Cadiz will embark upon when the sun rises again. To me, the mark of a good book has always been to what extent you vicariously identify with - or aspire to emulate - the characters. As this book nears its end, you are left with a papable sense of nostalgia, yearning to, again, re-live life with these wonderful people. Now, I glance at the bookshelf often to find that re-assurance that my friends, the Cameron family, et al, are still there waiting for our next visit together! READ THIS BOOK.

As Good As It Gets,

A wonderful book, anyone who has been to the gorgeous,
captivating waters of the Bahamas ... Exumas will find a special tug at their hearts in this book. Anyone who had family that left the states seeking another way of life will feel the magnetic pull of this book. Anyone who ever dreamed of living in the almost indescrible beauty of the islands will understand it all. One of my favorite books of all time, it is an unforgetable journey when you travel with the characters in this book. The best!

Caribbean History,
By Michael F Strocchi (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wind from the Carolinas (Paperback)
The book was slow to develop and hard to get in to at first. I did not like the long jumps in time that took place between characters. I liked the book and thought it was a wonderful piece of historical fiction. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and the history of the Caribbean. It is one of the must reads.

One of my favorite books,

I first read this book years ago and I've revisited it as an old friend many times since. Presented as a generational saga, the book is wrapped around a fascinating and little-known historical event-the settlement of the Bahmas Islands by British plantation owners who found their lives after the War for Independence unendurable. The story is first-rate with characters you care about. The struggle to recreate southern plantation life on the Outer Islands is brought to life but it's the characters who keep you turning the pages. My book is falling apart so I need to buy a new one!

One of the best historical fiction books that I have read,

As a Boat delivery Captain, who has traveled thru the Bahamas I had heard of the book from many old salts and finally found a well used 1st edition of the book. It is a page turner and transports us easily back to the times of the early settlers of the Islands. I have heard of a sequel called Blowin in the wind, But I have never seen it. Wind from the Carolinas is one of my treasured positions.

My husband and I were fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to read this book while we were sailing the Caribbean for 2 years. Much of our time was spent reading the volumes of books exchanged between us and other cruising sailors. This book became especially dear to us as we had just borrowed it, so are thrilled to have found it again! It is a gripping tale of the Bahamas, the way it was before tourism, beautiful and unspoiled, the way the "out islands" still are.

I read this book many years ago, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. The characters are memorable and the description of life in the Bahamas at this period is fascinating. The dreams that were lost and the lives that were changed forever make for an unforgettable tale of human perseverance and determination.

This is perhaps the most perfect book I have ever read. Definitely the best piece of historical fiction. Dealing with a subject not commonly studied it sheds light on the islands, the people, and this moment in history in a rare symphonic way. Sublime.

This story is to be savored as you would a fine wine.,

This is the most beautifully descriptive story ever written about the human spirit. It begins with a loyal British patriot that doesn't believe in the American "upstarts" and their democracy. Therefore, he moves his family to the Bahamas to start anew. From there we will view history through the eyes of his children, grandchildren and future generations. The beauty of this book is that is never gets lost or confused, the family developes and grows but never loses sight of it's history and purpose. This is a novel to be read and read again. With each passing you will find more enjoyment in the characters, world history and the Bahamanan life. So pull up a chair and enjoy this great adventure.
