7 of 8 people found the following review helpful By J Scott Morrison HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on July 19, 2008
Format: Audio CD
As of the date of this review Amazon has not listed the contents of this CD, so I thought I would do that:

Concerto in C major, TWV 51:C1, for Recorder, Strings, Continuo
Concerto in D minor, TWV 53:D1, for 2 Oboes, Bassoon, Strings, Continuo
Concerto in G major, TWV 51:G1, for Transverse Flute, 2 Violins, Continuo
Concerto in D major, TWV 52:D1, for 2 Horns, Strings, Continuo
Concerto in F minor, TWV 51:F1, for Oboe, Strings, Continuo

This is the second of a series of releases of Telemann's wind concertos. There is no mention of whether there will be more. The musical forces are La Stagione Frankfurt in the 1st, 2nd and 4th listed concertos; Camerata Köln is heard in the 3rd and 5th listed concertos, all under the direction of Michael Schneider, who is also the recorder soloist in No. 1 which at 16+ minutes is the longest work here. That work's finale is a marvelous and formally complex minuet which gives the recorder soloist a real workout; Schneider plays with grace, spirit and fluidity.

The 2nd listed concerto is a bit old-fashioned for its time, harking back to the late 17th century with its strict form and rather grave manner. It is notable for its masterful imitative writing, especially in the second movement.

The 3rd concerto for flute is pastoral in tone, partially conveyed by its intentionally naïve harmonies and melodies. The fast second movement dances along charmingly. The Andante sounds like an elaborated recitativo accompagnato. The finale requires real virtuosity on the part of the flutist and makes quaint use of a musette drone.

The short (seven minutes) 4th concerto for two horns evokes, not surprisingly, hunting calls.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Michael Schell on November 10, 2013
Format: Audio CD
I was drawn to this volume in CPO's survey of Telemann wind concertos because of a sentimental favorite: the F minor oboe concerto. As a boy I'd encountered it on an ancient Vox LP that also featured the "Haydn" oboe concerto (subsequently established not to have been written by Haydn) as well as a Baroque offering from obscure Robert Woodcock. It was in part this recording, and that Telemann concerto, that enticed me to learn the instrument. I eventually performed the F minor concerto with my junior high school orchestra. Though I was fortunate enough to have a fast tongue, enabling me to cope with the finale's repeated notes, the young string players struggled mightily with this unfamiliar key, and the overall result was pretty ragged. I used a modern Rigautat oboe, which helps in gliding over the challenges of four flats, but I imagine this must have been a very challenging piece for a period soloist whose instrument lacked metal keys and whose fingering was highly prejudiced toward G and D major.

Hans Peter Westermann's interpretation is an interesting insight into how the mainstream approach to this repertory has shifted in the decades since my own oboe-playing days. Westermann renders the fast movements with hardly any added ornamentation (though he does indulge himself more in the slow movement). And whereas in the 1970s we used to take the fast movements in strict tempo throughout, conductor Schneider frequently uses a kind of rubato with subtle tempo shifts from phrase to phrase, or from section to section. The first movement, for example, begins quite briskly, but Schneider takes a slight retard just before the oboe entrance, which continues at the new, slower tempo.
