4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, October 30, 2011
By
Geoff Woodland (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wind from Danyari (Paperback)
In a addition to the central characters, the Hennessey family, who are rich in emotion and diverse, I found the the author's detailed description of the landscape and the hard climate
of Western Australia, as stimulating as the human characters.
The scene is set with the arrival of the first Europeans to the area. This is followed by the introduction of Joe Hennessey, in the late 1800s, who, as a teenager, sets out to attempt to make his fortune in the gold fields of northern Australia.
The story flows as the author paints her characters to the harsh canvas of Australia between 1880 to the outbreak of WW1. The story has romance, tragedy and adventure, which are mixed with the way of life of two cultures. The ancient aboriginal way and the newcomers creates tension and sadness. I found book to be a page turner. I believe that this book is the first in a series that chronicles the Hennessey family. I will be checking out the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saga - West Australian outback, August 2, 2011
This review is from: Wind From Danyari (Paperback)
Wind from Danyari is the first book in the saga of the fictional Hennessy family who run a sheep property in the Carnarvon district of Western Australia. It begins with the wreck of the Dutch East Indiaman, the Zuytdorp, in 1712, the struggle of the Dutch sailors to survive the harsh terrain and the Aborigines who lived in the area.
Joe Hennessy takes up land for a sheep run in the 1880's which he builds into a thriving property. The book follows the fortunes of Joe, and his son and grandsons to the beginning of World War Two.
