Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This has, for 20 years, been the definitive book on wind for racing sailors worldwide.

Contains easy-to-understand conceptual models of wind behaviour. So that wherever you are it trains you to recognise what the wind is doing and why. The 3rd edition has:

  1. Detailed wind analysis of the world’s most popular venues.
  2. 40% of the book rewritten.
  3. Inclusion of sailor & meteorologist Fiona Campbell as co-author.

From the Back Cover

This book is gold dust for sailors.

Will there be a sea breeze today?

Will one side of the course have better wind?

Will the wind shift during the race?

For nearly 20 years Wind Strategy has given sailors the answer to these questions and many more. It gives a set of basic principles so that you can predict the wind's behaviour virtually anywhere in the world. It shows how the wind will shift and bend over the relatively small area of the racecourse, and how it is modified by:

  • The sea breeze
  • The land breeze
  • Gusts
  • Clouds
  • Cliffs
  • Other boats
  • Islands
  • The shore
  • Currents
  • Water temperature.

The book also gives specific wind advice for over 20 popular venues, from the Solent to Sydney.

In short, Wind Strategy gives you the "local knowledge" you need to become a winner.

Recommended for all racing sailors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another wind book for ocean racers, June 8, 2007
By Thomas L. Burgin (Andover, KS United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Wind Strategy (Paperback)
I am always looking for a book that can help me sail in Kansas. Kansas is the place where the forcast is 10 to 15, but the wind can be 3 or 25 knots. The wind on our last race was 305 to 342 with shifts about 2.5 minutes.

For a small lake sailer this book does have some information, but not what is needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wind Strategy: the hidden advantage of the aware sailor, July 13, 2008
By Brian R. Bergantz (San Jose, Ca. USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Wind Strategy (Paperback)
This book has brought out details of racing factors which definitely affect a races outcome. It is readable and immediately usable. It definitely promotes further insightfulness to sailing venues and awareness of conditions affecting the wind, which in no small part determines the outcome of any race. I recommend this book to any sailor who wishes to take the next step into a more technical relm of sailing.
