While watching this production of
The Wind in the Willows, close your eyes for just a moment, and you'll feel like you're watching
Masterpiece Theatre. Open them, and you'll still think so, only that the place has been invaded by upper-crust cousins of
Sesame Street. Each of the four videos contains three stand-alone tales, loosely grouped together by season. Superior voice acting, sophisticated puppetry, and Claymation truly give life to four dear friends--Badger, Mole, Mr. Rat, and Mr. Toad, who are amazingly lifelike in execution and emotion--and the worlds of the River Bank and Wild Wood that surround them. Some of the stories go down similar paths, often starring the ludicrously arrogant Mr. Toad battling the bad-guy weasels, but in the end, the right thing always manages to happen. The humor is quiet, the dialogue smart, and the enchanting stories so true to the spirit of the classic Kenneth Grahame
book that you can't help but be swept away. Your one regret will be that there are only four seasons. The tapes of this series produced by Thames Video and shown on HBO:
Spring Follies,
Summer Escapades,
Autumn Antics, and
Winter Tales.
