Book Description

Junior Classics October 2002
Set along the River Bank and Wild Wood of England's picturesque countryside, follow the delightful adventures of the good-natured Water Rat, the society-hating Badger, the cautious, agreeable Mole and a host of other good-hearted characters as they display more-than-human caring, kindness and patience toward their new friend, the naughty yet lovable, Toad of Toad Hall. Originally told as a bedtime story to his young son, The Wind in the Willows is perfectly suited for audio. Grahame's magical tale remains a classic favorite among the young and old alike, nearly 100 years after first published in book form.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Martin Jarvis gives such a spectacular performance in this classic woodland adventure story that it would be a shame to limit his talents to children. Jarvis gives each character his own voice, and individual personalities shine through as Ratty, Mole, Toad, and Badger jump into one adventure after another. Jarvis seems to enjoy Grahame's classic tale, and his enthusiasm and amusement are contagious. He flawlessly captures the hilarity of Toad's bad driving and times perfectly the rousing dialogue between characters. The selection of wind quintets between chapters emphasizes the pastoral scenes created by Grahame, making for five-star entertainment in a tiny package. H.L.S. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great reading, December 28, 2011
This review is from: The Wind in the Willows (Junior Classics) (Audio CD)
Mr. Jarvis's reading is superb. This and the excellence of the text made for an enjoyable listening experience for both my son and me. The abridgment is well done.

First of all, it is not Kenneth Grahame that is narrating here. It is Martin Jarvis. Secondly, if you cannot follow the plot line of "Wind in the Willows" you should not be writing reviews of ANYTHING. Good GOD!!! It is a JUNIOR Classic. My only criticism is that it is abridged which I am opposed to on ethical grounds.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Narration but didn't like the plot, November 1, 2009

I have nothing against the quality of the narration, Gramme does a great job, but I just didn't like the story. It was very difficult to follow, even for me. I tried playing this for my children at night, and afterwards they would always have to ask me what happened. But they kept asking for it again. I never read the book as a kid so that didn't help. I mean I just didn't like that toad character. I will get a CD in the future that is easier for kids to follow. I bought this after it was given a good mention in the National Review Magazine.
