At least half the snake broke off the very first time I gently tried to pull it out of the drain. Now, unless the water flushes the snake though my plumbing, I've got a tool with teeth that will catch all the hair stuck in my drain.

I suspect a clever marketing sleight-of-hand with the DRANO SNAKE PLUS.

The "kit" includes an 18-inch, thin, flexible plastic, barbed "snake" with handle and an 18 oz bottle of Drano Pro Concentrate Gel.

The user is instructed to run the snake down into the clogged drain first, ostensibly loosening whatever gunk is down there and perhaps bringing up something yucky when the snake is withdrawn. Then, the full bottle of gel is to be dumped down the hole to sit for 30 minutes, after which time there's to be a hot water flush. And voila!

In my hands, the snake came back up completely free of any sign of congealed slime or matted hair, so I have to believe it didn't come into contact with any blockage at all and that part of the exercise was pointless. That said, the half-hour incubation with the gel worked like a charm as the sink subsequently drained swiftly with both the hot and cold taps turned to "on" full flow.

I suspect the gel would work just as well without the snake and the latter prop has been included in the kit to boost perceived added value and the manufacturer's profit margin. A few shakes of a feathered voodoo rattle accompanied by an appropriate incantation intoned over the offending orifice before pouring-in the gel may get the job done just as efficiently.

My suggestion is to first try a less expensive clog remover, say the Drano Max Gel, Clog Remover, 80-Ounce, before resorting to this pricier option.

I tried this product which turned a slow running drain into a completely stopped up drain. The instructions say to start with the tool, its "teeth" broke off, with the gentlest of maneuverings, and added to the clog. The liquid sat in the sink, at the same level, for over 12 hours. I had to call a pro.

My daughter pointed out that a money-back guarantee is offered. I followed the instructions on the refund form, filling out all the information, and sent my original receipt and irreplaceable UPC code from the box. I just got a letter denying my refund because "a valid UPC was not submitted" - well, it was, and it was the original. Not only is Drano's product a bust, so is their customer service.

I live in an apartment building, and whenever I have a problem in my apartment the maintenance men takes FOREVER to come and fix it. So when my bathtub got clogged up, I didn't waste my time filling out a report. I saw the Drano snake plus commercial and was a little hesitant about it until I saw the great reviews on Amazon.com. When I got the kit, the snake was curved like a semicircle, I inserted the snake in my drain gave it a few jiggles, and proceeded to slide it in and out as the directions suggested, for at least 5 minutes. The snake didn't pull anything out, so I applied the Drano into the drain slowly as the directions instructed and went to sleep. I woke up boiled hot water and put it into the drain. Minutes later when I took a shower I was amazed at how fast my bathtub was draining the water. I am no longer knee deep in water when taking a shower, or washing the tub everyday because of dirty bath water that won't drain. This product is great and I highly recommend it.

I wouldn't buy this. I assumed the snake was durable, but on the first tug it broke in half and it's now in the elbow of my drain. So basically I've got a long stick with upward facing spikes to catch more crap. I'm going to end up having to go into the crawl space and remove it from below. Not exactly a convenient drain cleaner....

My wife brought this home to clear the clog in our bathroom sink. The snake was too flimsy and short to get at the clog. Other reviews calling it a toy are exactly correct. It certainly looks like a toy. The gel didn't help one bit. We called a plummer out and he snaked it clear in about two minutes flat. The clog wasn't that bad. Conversley, it took him about ten to twenty minutes to clear the shower drain during the same visit. I didn't have any gel left to even attempt to clear that one with this product. I certainly wasn't going to buy more.

So we figured, ok nothing lost except some time and effort. My wife sent in the UPC from the box and the receipt just as instructed to try to get our money back. All we got back was a letter saying that the UPC was not returned and so we couldn't get our money back. Now, my wife is a pro at sending in for mail-in rebates. She follows rebates instructions very carefully. I've seen her do it for years. We even have the rest of the box with UPC cut out of it still here. S.C. Johnson either lost that UPC or is falsely claiming they didn't receive it so not to lose their shirt on this product. Besides, they got the receipt. Do they seriously think people are going to send in fake receipts for $10 or less? Come on! Has anyone successfully received their rebate? If so, you should post a review to counter my deserved 1-star review here. I'll never buy another S.C. Johnson product again if i can help it!

I had a clog in my bathtub that wouldn't unclog with a plunger, so I decided to try this out. I had a hard time fitting the snake attachment into my drain, and once I got it in it seemed to be very awkward. My drain could be an odd layout for all I know, but this was advertised as fitting any drain. When I pulled it out it had a very small amount of hair gunk on it. I added the liquid drano and otherwise followed the directions. It made the clog drain slightly, but was still very slow. The next day I went to the store and bought another brand of just plain liquid drain opener and it unclogged my drain with one application. In all fairness the Drano snake could have unclogged most or part of the clog and the other stuff finished the job, but it's advertised as unclogging even the toughest of clogs. I think next time I'm better off spending less money on plain drain cleaner and doing a couple of applications.

DO NOT purchase this product. The plastic snake is very cheaply made and will break. Not only did the teeth break off, but the snake broke in half and got stuck in my shower drain. Not much force is needed to break it.

The half of the plastic snake from Drano, I was able to get out using a drain auger. Get yourself a real drain auger made of metal. This is what I used to get the broken Drano snake out. General Pipe Cleaners R-25SM Spin Thru Drain Auger with 1/4-Inch by 25-Feet Cable

Edit: I contacted Johnson and Johnson about their crappy snake product and they sent me a check for a full refund. Stick to the drain auger above. It will save you headaches.

The instructions for this thing are relatively simple. Step one: use the snake to remove the clog gunk. Step two: Use the gel to clear up the rest. If only life were simple...

The drain snake explodes the instant it touches anything resembling a clog and instantly fuses to the side of your drain like a money sucking parasite. It then releases some alloy of dwarven mithril and adamantium to create an indestructible clog inside your drain. Once it has your drain hostage your only choice is to throw more money down the drain and call a plumber to fix it. I can't confirm that there is even gel in the bottle nor that anyone in the history of man has ever gotten past step one.

Would not recommend to my worst enemies drains.

I used this product a couple weeks ago after having bad blockage that caused the shower to fill up right away. As of right now, the shower is working as good as new and drains immediately without any water filling up. If this holds up, sure beats paying a plumber!

UPDATE: It's been a few months now and still no problems! It was a bad block too. Worked like a charm.
