4.0 out of 5 stars Very cool, but..., February 16, 2009

This review is from: Windmill Fire One Lighter (Sports)
Don't bet your pinky it will light (see Four Rooms or Man From the South to understand reference) - as it often takes a couple tries (problem much worse at higher elevations). But, lighter is very durable, works when windy, and stays closed.

UPDATE: C. Finley suggesting "Those claiming trouble with lighting did not read the instructions and set the flame properly" is, in fact, identifying the big downside to this lighter and not the users - it's very sensitive. It seems to me that at least one in five of the reviews I've read online (elsewhere) say their Fire One Lighter died in the first month. BUT, I would bet their problem is how atmospheric changes in just a month (or small elevation changes while hiking, using a different manufacturer of butane, etc.) can require an adjustment to get this thing to light. The problem is not with the starter (which I would expect to work long after I lose the thing or end up passing it down to my grandchildren - ha ha) as even the flame of another lighter won't light it with an incorrect fuel / oxygen mixture. So, don't forget to always carry a screwdriver (a dime won't fit) when camping with this lighter. After fine tuning just right, it lights so reliably I might even be willing to bet my pinky on it (LOL). Also, please note the manufacturer's recommendation on only using Triple-Refined butane (such as is the fuel at Sportsman Warehouse but not at Ace Hardware) such as Xikar Premium Butane Fuel Refill for Lighters - 2 Pack. I have not had a problem with the plastic lid hinge (its weakest design point) but its smallness (making it easier to carry) does mean fewer lights per refill (lasts longer than I expect, but not much longer than a week of camping) than Windmill's other larger (albeit more expensive and heavier) lighters. It's also a good thing you can see through the plastic as it often takes several tries to completely fill it. In summary, I love this lighter (especially for the $14 I paid for a yellow one). But, ownership requires some effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars works well, priced well, September 28, 2009

This lighter does what I need, it lights cigars in the wind. I have had it for a couple of months and the only issue I had was the ignition button heated up during repeated use while sharing the lighter several times on one occasion. The lighting instructions are to hold the button before pressing all the way. I did find that it worked more reliably when this was done each time. The window to check fluid level was very useful. I did not pay nearly as much for this lighter as I would have for many of the other windproof lighters on the market. I would buy this lighter again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay lighter, funky cap, July 26, 2011

The design is nice. Works as expected and you can adjust the flame with your fingernail. Issue I have with this is that the spring on the cap could be a little tighter. When you turn the lighter upside down, as many of us do, the plastic cap wants to go in front of the flame. So I have to use my finger to hold the cap open. Last week the latch to open the cap broke, it's some cheap pot metal, junk! So, I've not cut off the cap and all is well, if not ghetto looking.
