Book Description

September 10, 1996
Written by the experts who originally designed and implemented the X Window System and with new, significant input from X Window Consortium members who have helped evolve X Version 11, Release 6, this fourth edition is a major revision of this definitive reference. Updated to conform with the latest released software: X Version 11, Release 6.1, this edition also has been redesigned for three separate books in an effort to make each more usable for its targeted audience.

Each book is thus more focused and more use manageable: that is, by being separate volumes, a reader can now open several books simultaneously to cross reference related material. In addition, each volume provides its own comprehensive subject-oriented index that further enhances its overall value.

The Definitive reference to X Window System, direct from the X Window Consortium at MIT.
Updated for X Windows Version 11, Release 6.1.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Overview of X Window Systems, September 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: X Window System: Core Libraries and Standards (Paperback)
I am glad to have a copy of this book as it gives me a very good overall understanding of all the X window essentials. I used to program using Motif and the tools, and that was not sufficient when I came to the graphical aspects of the X Windows. This book puts things into perspective for me, and is easy to read. One thing I dislike about the format of this book is the brackets at the margin of the book to enclose code snippets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supersedes X Window System: The Complete Reference, October 23, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: X Window System: Core Libraries and Standards (Paperback)
This book, in addition to two other books, supersedes X Window System: The Complete Reference to Xlib, X Protocol, ICCCM, and XLFD, published in 1992. You can get the content listing for this book, and other Digital Press books, at http://www.bhusa.com/digitalpress/.

This book is probably essential to anyone wishing to utilize the X Window System; however, as a contributer to XFree86, I still find this book useful, though it was not rewritten specifically to be a contributers guide.

Covers Xlib, ICCCM, and XLFD. X Protocol coverage has been split into a book called X Window System: Core and Extension Protocols. The other book in this three part series is titled X Window System: Extension Libraries.
