The target audience for this book is NOT advanced users,
By
This review is from: Windows® 2000 Secrets® (Paperback)
The book itself is OK for beginners or average users. A lot of content in the book is redundant with the online documentation or simply obvious and things like how to launch the registry editor to make a change are explained OVER and OVER again. Once is enough! Hardly for advanced users. Some undocumented registry keys are mentioned, but those can be also found by a quick search on the internet. Screenshots are outdated with beta-version content and some other documentation is outright wrong because it got changed in major ways between the time the book has been written and Windows 2000 got finally released. The book is a typical example of "take a lot of screenshots and fill the book with lots of redundant help available elsewhere, put here and there some new and good content and make it appear a big deal. Advanced NT folks will be rather disappointed.

No Secrets,
This review is from: Windows® 2000 Secrets® (Paperback)
If all you are looking for is a very high-level view of Windows 2000 then this book may be OK. But if you want a detailed look at the system, there are much better books available at comparable prices. The title is a misnomer -- there are no secrets to be found here!

Deeply hidden secret,

The book itself is fine. Ironically, the CD included cannot be read by my Windows 2000 system and there is no information in the book regarding this problem and nowhere to go for needed help.

Learning Windows 2000,

This review is from: Windows® 2000 Secrets® (Paperback)
Windows 2000 operating system is no longer the latest and greatest, but there are still millions of PC's that have this system installed. For those who are new to Windows 2000 or for those who want answers to questions and/or guidance for ways to better utilize its features, this reference guide can prove to be very useful.
With this book, beginners, intermediate users, and advanced students of Windows 2000 can find answers to questions and valuable tips and other information on ways to make the system more useful. I know the Windows 2000 system pretty well, but I was still surprised by some of the information contained in this guide. There are features of Windows 2000 that I never knew existed until I read this book. The pages of this guide include bullets, boldface text, screen shots, and other things you associate with a reference book. In the left- hand margin of each page, the book includes symbols that make it easy to find a particular reference point. Tips are designated by a light bulb, "secrets" are shown with a padlock, general notes are highlighted with a notebook and pen, etc. This makes it quick and easy to find these important highlights as you scan down each page. This book would probably be a little better if it further expanded on some of the key topics and if it included even more screen shots to go with the user- friendly outline format. But this is still a very good reference guide regardless. It can help educate new users and it can show more advanced users some important ways to enhance their Windows 2000 operating system so that they can get the most out of it. There is a lot to be discovered with Windows 2000, and this guide helps lead the way to a better understanding.

No secrets.,

Windows 2000 has lots of secrets, but this book (unlike the first "Secrets" books) describes few of them. It is close to what the manual should be.

Not Very Good,
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows® 2000 Secrets® (Paperback)
This book was a real disappointment. After purchasing and enjoying the Windows 95 Secrets, Windows 98 Secrets, and More Windows 98 Secrets books; I recently purchased the Windows 2000 Secrets and found it to be seriously lacking. It's strange; the Windows ME Secrets book was great! This book lacks heart. Its a drab, dull, superficial look at Windows 2000. Just about any Windows 2000 book would be better than this one. Its hard to believe the same guy who wrote all those great books is actually responsible for this miserable work. Must have been a bad day.

This is a Windows 2000 "How To" book. If you are looking for a book about Windows 2000 "Secrets" then don't waste your money. This book does a mediocre job of walking you through using Windows 2000, and the "Secrets" are few and far between... and some are not even secrets at all.If you are looking for a how to book, buy one of Microsoft's books, they're much better at this. Very disappointed. Kind of feel like I got hit with a bait and switch.

When the e-book is installed on the hard disk for use without the CD-ROM, the Search function will not work until the book has been accessed from the CD-ROM _and_ the data has been indexed.
