Windows 98 Secrets Gold is a boxed set containing a book (Windows 98 Secrets) and several CD-ROMs. The book is the star of the show. The CD-ROMs are worth exploring but may not be worth the extra cost they add to the price of the book, which is also sold by itself.

With that in mind, Windows 98 Secrets is an excellent book. It includes full documentation of all of Windows 98's features, plus quite a bit of extra, less-well-known information. Among the useful secrets the authors share are specific procedures for resolving hardware resource conflicts, a way to access your Exchange address book directly, and the details of using Make Compatible, a utility that helps make Windows 3.x programs run properly under Windows 98. The odds are good that you'll learn something to increase your efficiency or happiness as a Windows 98 user.

Four CD-ROMs accompany the book. These four discs contain a lot of shareware and freeware, plus the full text of Windows 98 Secrets in WinHelp format. The shareware programs--some 16-bit and some 32-bit, by the way--serve many purposes, but quite a few popular tools (like WinZip, HotDog, and Acrobat Reader) are conspicuously missing. The interface is pretty clunky, too. Helpful hint: You should put Bonus Disk 2 into your CD-ROM drive first. --David Wall --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Brian Livingston is the author of IDG Books Worldwide's best-selling Windows Secrets series, including Windows 3.pl?idgbook:0-7645-3360-6:book-idg::uidg1929>More Windows 98 Secrets. His books are printed in more than 30 languages. In addition to writing books, Brian is a contributing editor of InfoWorld magazine, and has been a contributing editor of PC Computing, PC World, Windows Sources, and other magazines. He was a recipient of the 1991 Award for Technical Excellence from the National Microcomputer Managers Association.; Davis Straub is a Windows multimedia software developer. He is the former president of Generic Software, a developer of Generic CADD, the first successful, affordable CADD program. Author of more than 200 articles, Mr. Straub first wrote for PC World magazine in 1983.

Although the book lives up to its title, there are plenty of secrets, undocumented features and tips offered in the book, mostly Windows 98 Secrets Gold is a review of stuff most users will already know. In its current form, the book should be published in 2 volumes because it is quite unwieldy as a single volume making it difficult to sit and read. On the other hand, if the editors stuck to the title and only printed the secrets then the book would be much shorter and in my opinion, more useful. Secrets, undocumented features and tips are identified in the text margins with an icon and one only need flip through the book to realize that if you were to distill out the non iconized text, then the book would be much more compact. Curiously, the book keeps making distinctions between the features in Windows 98 and Windows 3.1 with hardly a nod to Windows 95. Still, like the authors state in the introduction, if even one tip is useful, you probably will have gotten your money's worth.

This is THE book on WINDOWS 98! I also have the Windows 95 version, and find it to be the most helpful, so I am now reading my new copy of Windows 98...AND with 4 CDs, it is truly a great deal! Windows 95 users can benefit from this book also! A MUST have book for YOUR library.

This book gives you every tool you need to get yourself through the rough edges, yet get the most from the Operating System! I love it and its tools!!!
