3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, January 24, 2008
This review is from: Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Inside Out (Paperback)
I was looking forward to the release of this book having had good success with other MS Inside Out books. The author mostly repeats what is obvious when viewing configuration pages without providing much in the way of additional, anecdotal information that would help explain the various settings.

The section on backups using the stsadm utility is frustrating as the author keeps repeating the location of stsadm for 32 and 64 bit versions, which happen to be located in the same directory for both. I count 14 times within 5 pages using 4 lines each time. I couldn't help but feel he was getting paid by the word and trying to fill the pages.

The book would be most useful as a quick reference guide or if you are considering using WSS 3.0 and want quick facts regarding it's features.

If you want to buy only one book on the subject of SharePoint 2007/WSS 3.0 'Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Unleashed' is the one I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars SharePoint Inside Out, February 28, 2008
This review is from: Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Inside Out (Paperback)
Excellent book, well presented, well written. Either for a front-to-back tutorial, or for dipping into for actual details, this book helps cut through the fog created by bloggers, badly-written books and other useless dross that so often clutters up this type of product.

And while I have your ear, there should be a "Law Of The Internet" that says you have to date-stamp informational pages so that unsuspecting persons don't think they are getting good information, when in fact it is several years (or versions) out of date!

Just a rant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read SharePoint Book, January 26, 2008
This review is from: Windows® SharePoint® Services 3.0 Inside Out (Paperback)
I just finshed this book and I have about 10 pages of notes that I created over the past 2 weeks of reading this book. The author is a SharePoint consultant and not a trainer so it give great perspective of what is really happening within a Sharepoint project. I am very impressed at the insight that is given here. This book will help you do it right the first time. I will be giving this to my Sharepoint administrator for him to read next.
