Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This is a guide for beginners, but it's not dumbed down at all. Windows 2000: A Beginner's Guide takes on a giant piece of software and explains it, one component at a time. Author Martin S. Matthews has earned commendation for his patient approach to complex subjects and clearly written procedures that get right to the point. As a result of his efforts, readers get a great combination of explanatory text--how Windows 2000 works, what its features are for, and how you ought to use them--and crunchy how-to material. If you have a vague idea that certain features of Windows 2000 might make your organization more efficient, this book likely will help you make a deployment decision and, if you decide to go ahead, get the show on the road in a practical sense.

A typical section deals with Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows 2000. In his coverage of that software, Matthews explains how IIS fits into the rest of the Windows 2000 server before he launches into a discussion of how to plan for installation and then set up the software. From there, variations get attention--remote administration is a big one, as is upgrading from a previous IIS version. Matthews's section on automated installation of Windows 2000 is excellent, too. --David Wall

Topics covered: All operational aspects of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server, explained for power users and system administrators. 5.0 out of 5 stars Making upgrading and configuring a little easier., July 31, 2000
This review is from: Windows 2000: A Beginner's Guide (Paperback)
Think back to the early days of computers when DOS 6 appeared on the scene. Remember how important is was that there was some sort of reference material for the beginner. Now along comes Windows 2000 and this concepts is even more important now.

Martin Mathews knows how important this, and as an author of for than 50 books on computers, he has taken the time to make sure even the most inexperienced users will be able to use and work with Microsoft's newest creation, Windows 2000.

For under $40.00, this 600 plus page book covers both the Professional and server versions of Windows 2000. There is also coverage of migrations issues, deployment issues, networking, Internet communications, customizing and administration of both server and professional.

Lewis makes it easy to understand and the book is easy to follow. There are also eight pages of network blueprints to give you an idea of the different configurations possible. If you preparing for any of the new exams, this book is only a guideline. You will need other material to study from.

Overall this book exceeds my expectations and is one I will begin to use in the training arena. Matthews is certainly proved to the reader why he highly respected in the IT industry.

1.0 out of 5 stars Windows 2000 : A Beginners Guide, March 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 2000: A Beginner's Guide (Paperback)
This book is NOT designed for beginner's.

The layout is confusing and fussy! It has not been written for beginners in mind or even those who have some basic idea of networking and of operating systems, like myself. You may find this book useful perhaps as a reference guide only.

Want to learn about Windows 2000? - pay the price and sit a tutored course and be led by example as to what the OS is about!, your money would be better spent.

Maybe it would be easier to understand if it were not written in American?
