5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Microsoft Win2K Clusters.
I have bought several books on MS Clusters, what a waste of $$$ they were filled with theory, theory, theory , theory on admin, install and config of Ms Sql, MS Exchange.

One book had one page, that's right, one page on installing Exchange on a MS Cluster.

Bottom line you can get all the theory on any website including Microsoft, but when you have 30K worth of servers...

If you've never clustered servers, this is a start. If you expect to learn in depth about geographically dispersed clusters, quorum recovery, or other such advanced topics, you won't find it here. Lot's of good ol' boy discussion, but found myself searching for the beef.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Microsoft Win2K Clusters., November 26, 2001
This review is from: Windows 2000 Clustering and Load Balancing Handbook (Paperback)
I have bought several books on MS Clusters, what a waste of $$$ they were filled with theory, theory, theory , theory on admin, install and config of Ms Sql, MS Exchange.

One book had one page, that's right, one page on installing Exchange on a MS Cluster.

Bottom line you can get all the theory on any website including Microsoft, but when you have 30K worth of servers being delivered and you need to build your cluster, the last thing you want is more theory.

This book that will show you step by step how to admin, config, install a MS Cluster with Sql, Exchange, etc..

THIS BOOK IS IT .. the author does an EXCELLENT job, not only with his easy to understand writing style, but with all the
supporting images. This removes the all to common second guessing that alot of other computer books leave you with.

If you need to build, admin, config, a cluster then this is
it ..

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for someone trying to cluster SQL server, August 9, 2002
By

This review is from: Windows 2000 Clustering and Load Balancing Handbook (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone trying to implement any sort of clustering or load balancing on Windows 2000. There is a lot of confusion as to what's needed for clustering SQL server and how to do it.

This book provides in-depth information and step-by-step instructions on what hardware you need, how it should be configured, how to install MSCS, how to cluster your SQL servers, and how to load balance your web servers (as well as Exchange).

Instructions didn't skip through steps and screen shots were accurate! Thanks Joseph Lamb!

Definitely made getting our SQL clustered and web servers load balanced properly much easier.

Microsoft has a SQL cluster guide on their site, and NetApp has a whitepaper on SQL clustering using their storage which is VERY descriptive. Both are free and would give you a condensed, concise version of getting started without the fluff.

If you need to quickly understand what Windows 2000 load balancing and clustering is, this book will provide you with the information. It's written in a clear and easy to understand format, complete with the necessary illustrations to drive the key points home. By far, this is one the better technical books I've read in awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great How To, July 20, 2006

After spending a lot of time going through Microsoft Whitepapers and trying to piece meal together instructions on setting up a cluster, I found this book. It's great. The author makes good use of screen shots and all of the instructions are Step by Step. This book answered a lot of my questions and has helped me resolve strange issues on a cluster that I inherited in my new job. In particular, I wanted to know the ins and out of setting up Clustered File Shares. This is a topic the Microsoft Whitepaper didn't cover. Finally, I understand how my predecessor set up the file shares and what he didn't do! This book is a Godsend! My cluster is Win2003, but I still found this book to be well organized, thorough and applicable to Win2003 MSCS.

If you need step by step instructions and clear explanations, this book is for you.

Microsoft`s technical articles and KB`s dont even get close to the depth and detail this book offers on the whole process that must happen when one starts considering NLB/Clustering as a solution. Right from the planning to screen shots of configuring hardware, this book is a complete and excellent hands-on resource!!

The book is clear and simply. It approaches to the Microsoft clustering solution in a very well organized manner, plus is has the 1-2-3 for configuring, troubleshooting and managing a Microsoft cluster. Definitely is good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of screenshoots. Useful for Windows 2003 also., September 3, 2004

This review is from: Windows 2000 Clustering and Load Balancing Handbook (Paperback)
This book is amazing, easy to read and straight to the point. You can read it from cover to cover or just skip intro and go directly to the SQL Cluster Chapter or any other chapter you would like to read. If you can read, you'll have running a Windows cluster in a blink of an eye.

I love the SQL part. Its plenty of screenshoots and details so you won't loss yourself in the installation process. I used this chapter to build a Windows 2003 Cluster with no problem at all. The only portion that changed a little or does not apply at 100% is the initial Cluster SetUp, explained in chapter 4; the Windows2003 way is easier. The SQL Cluster Installation, chapter 7, follows the same Windows2000 steps (just be aware of Microsoft article 815431).

The Windows 2003 Cluster Administrator console does not change a lot either, so book is still relevant to this topic too.

Want to learn Windows clustering? This is the book! Highly recommended.

This is a very good book for anyone who needs to setup a NLB or Cluster. Author walks you thru the entire process and makes good suggestion if your situation is different from the one offered in the book's example. Good book. I wish more IT books would offer same type of help.
