The book also details the most popular and necessary areas such as Active Directory, KERBEROS, Security and Networking. If you are ready to tackle Windows 2000, this book is for you."
Joel Rosenblatt, Columbia University, AcIS
"Windows 2000 Server Professional Reference is unusually complete in its coverage of Windows 2000. This book covers all of the major features and functionalities and touches upon many minor ones. With this book I now have access to information that was not even covered in the Microsoft Certified training course I attended. In addition, each chapter stands on its own as a reference guide which makes this book an ideal reference for those looking for specific information. This book will be a well thumbed-through reference."
Heidi Morgan, IPT Leader/LANS, TYBRIN Corporation
"This is a great reference for people responsible for administering, deploying, or designing Windows 2000 solutions. It provides detail on both specific design issues as well as actual tasks and provides a good starting point in researching the inherent technology built into the Windows 2000 NOS. In addition, the author goes beyond offering information by interjecting with valid comments and recommendations based on his real-world experience."
Kevin Sullivan, MCSE+I, Senior Network Engineer, Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc

Very poor,
This review is from: Windows 2000 Server Professional Reference (Hardcover)
This book is mainly useless. If you want to know how each piece of the MS server 2000 works, just look at the help files. This book simply repeats that. It does NOT tell you how the pieces work together. For example, if you wanted to set up a DNS server and Web server that work together on the same computer(as is a common task for a lot of people) this book fails. Most books are like this one. BOTTOM LINE - They tell you how to install a piece of the os along with a vague descrition of that piece and move on to the next topic. This is ALREADY in the MS help files and mostly uselss.

Very Thorough!,

Believe it or not, I actually sat down and read most of this 1,800 page book. I was trying to get a feel for Windows 2000 Server, and I thought the bigger the book the better. It was a great place to start! The chapters are written so that the concepts are easily undersandable, and words and terms are defined in case you aren't familiar with them. There are lots of diagrams and screen shots to assist you in understanding how Active Directory works and is designed. The installation section is very thorough, and there are chapters to help you set up and use DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, Active Directory, and understand trusts. It seems like a one-stop shop for anyone who needs a thorough introduction to the Windows 2000 Server operating system. It's sort of a how-to in a sense, and even details the differences in installing clean or performing an upgrade. I found the sections on security to be extrememly helpful, since there are so many new security features and protocols available since the release of NT 4.0. I'd suggest this book as a great first read for new network administrators on a 2000 network, and also as a handy desk reference for everything listed above and then some. The book also covers creating users and groups, monitoring the network, IIS, and IPSec.

This review is from: Windows 2000 Server Professional Reference (Hardcover)
This book has some good information and a couple of good indexes and lists of things you don't find like login script variables and a couple of good appendixes, but it's not as thorough as it should be considering its size. there is a lot of repitition including direct cutting and pasting of small sections. Also it doesn't have nearly the amount of Active Directory info I expected. It's just an introduction to win2k with a couple of nice bonuses, but it's not enough to get out there and set up a network with.
