This will become THE bible on Metaframe & Win2k Terminal Svc,
By
This review is from: Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I have been Managing a large Citrix environment for years and this is, by far, the best reference that I have read. There is no doubt that the author has actually used the product. It's not just a rehash of Citrix documentation. it is valuable information on necessary registry changes and policies that you need to use to make Metaframe the product it was intended to be. If you have used Metaframe you will love this book as a reference. If you have never used Metaframe you will learn how to proceed from the installation process all the way to some pretty advanced management techniques. This book is a must have for any Metaframe or Win2k Terminal Services administrator.

I don't think there's a single page in this book not packed with valuable information. I found this book near-perfect for someone experienced in the NT world but not in Citrix/TS. After finishing reading nearly the entire book in a single pass, I keep going back to it on a daily basis for reference. Few books can do that and even fewer on such a specialized area. I wish Todd would write a sequel covering application serving beyond the set up (he started doing so towards the end of this book). This guy can definitely write in a clear way. For example, reading his special tips after the discussion of a topic I felt as if he could read my mind and sure enough, there was the tip elaborating on a specific detail. Excellent.

What every IT/IS/MIS book should be like!,
By DOuG pRATt "DOuG pRATt" (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
This is simply an excellent piece of work. Terminal Server and MetaFrame are deceptively easy to install and connect to. They are, in fact, extremely complex. The issues surrounding global vs. user objects, NTFS file permissions, and user folder mapping can, and will, drive many -- if not most -- administrators crazy.Mr. Mathers has written a really useful book. If you're already familiar with the essentials of what's going on with the smoke-and-mirrors of this remote display technology, you might want to get started by going straight to the appendices. You absolutely must take his advice to heart that Terminal Server users must not have full access permissions, then you should follow his advice on what to do about all the problems that will be revealed by denying full access to users. Here is a stand-out reference among Windows-related books. As the saying goes, if you're going to have only one book this is the one.

THE book for Thin Client admins.,
This review is from: Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I bought his first edition of this book and practically used it as an installation manual and admin. manual. It helped in our justification and planning as well. His last book was so good, I WAITED for this to come out. When it did, and no stores around here had it, I traveled 1 hr. to a store that did have it at about 10pm. That's how much this book has helped us out here. I'm 3/4 finished w/ this edition and it's just as good. VERY detailed and great advice and tips from planning to a SECURE server setup. I like a book that gives personal opinions and perspectives. If you are an admin in this field, this is probably the ONLY book you'll need!!

Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal,
By Chris Kraft (Columbus, NE) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I found the book very well organized with valuable comparisons of different products and configurations. It appears to cover all subjects pertaining to Thin Client computing better than any other book that I have been able to find. It is also very helpful the way different implementations are catagorized, e.g.ICA, NT 4.0 TSE from Windows 2000. Most of the books that I have looked at so far do a poor job of distinguishing between the different implementations of TS while covering a certain topic.

It's a good book for anyone starting or in the process of rolling out Terminal Servers with Citrix Metaframe. One would only wish for more information about appsec.exe and Application management.

This is an excellent follow-up to his first book on Terminal Server. By using the techniques in this book, you will increase both the stability and the performance of your Terminal Server. It is helpful for just 'plain vanilla' installations, and also those utilizing a Citrix solution. Great addition to anyone's 'Toolbox'.

A Bible of Citrix Metaframe,

This review is from: Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
A great book. The author lists out the common problems facing by the users. I do not have any experience in Citrix. But my boss requires me to install and implement in short of time. I use the installation guide from the software. It is not useful. My server always down after install the software. All users are angry. After reading this book, I found that I miss a lot of things such as IE4 installation problems, tunning and etc. So I think if you want to implement Citrix successful, read this book firetly.

A comprehensive book!,

This review is from: Windows NT/2000 Thin Client Solutions: Implementing Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
This book is a comprehensive text and well organised offering, whether your new to Citrix or not. I particilarly liked the section on load-balancing and the comprehensive section on configuring web connectivity (especially adding Active X controls to your web pages to make the whole Citrix experience even more seamless!).No book such as this would be complete without a detailed section on troubleshooting Metaframe - which this has. I recommend this book!

If you are thinking about configuring a Terminal Services server and/or using Citrix Metaframe, this is the best book you can buy. I have bought them all, and even if you have experience with TS, and or Citrix, this book is full of great tips and extremely useful information. Buy it! Don't wait.
