5.0 out of 5 stars Very good material.
The current cost of training for the MCSE is rather expensive and the commitment is also extremely important. As a Technical Instructor I am always looking for a great supplemental books for the students to be able to learn outside the classroom and this set may be the perfect fit.

The 4-book set covers exams 70-210, 215, 216 & 217. In book 1 Windows 2000...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacking in Theory
I found that these books were full of step by step explanations of how to do things, but lacked in depth explanations of why you would do the things and what they meant. I have not tried the Sybex Core pack, but the Sybex SQL Server 70-229 did a much better job of getting at the theory and not just the semantics of how to do things step by step.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good material., February 19, 2001
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)

In book 1 Windows 2000 professional, you learn everything from the installation to administration, troubleshooting, optimizing, desktop support and networking. The book is an excellent breakdown and take you step by step to success.

Book 2, Windows 2000 Server, the breakdown is in several section such as installing, admin, configuration, troubleshooting, hardware and operating system integration, security and networking.

Book 3, Windows 2000 network infrastructure, you learn to install, configure, maintain and monitor things like DNS, DHCP, Remote Access, protocols, WINS, IP routing, NAT and certificate Servers. This book is one of the best I have seen in the breakdown for the exam.

Book 4, Windows 2000 Directory Services, starts off with the basics of Active Directory and the configuration and administration. You then move to configuration of DNS, management of servers, policy management and security.

The books are perfect for the classroom or self-study, providing you have the necessary hardware. Each chapter has exercises, review questions, exam questions in case study format. There is also step-by-step hands-on instruction and study and exam prep tips and finally a practice exam.

With the inclusion of the cd-rom with Exam gear testing software and Exam Sim CBT software you have one great package to get you started down the road the MCSE 2000 Success.

5.0 out of 5 stars A better buy, December 21, 2000

This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)
I am very happy with these books. I purchased two books from microsoft press (70-58 70-210) with mixed results. I found this set well written. I am now on my way. And should finish all my tests within the next 2 months. I really liked the info given to help you to prepare for your first test. I went in nervous but did not get caught off guard. I knew what to expect. The test did not seem any harder than the exam software. The software that you got for free helped. I learned you need to read and understand what IS being asked of you. I used the ebook to print up fast facts and post them in my room. I took diagrams and table blew them up and posted them from the ebook. All worked out for me. I do recommend these books. Although I did find misprints typos errs and even a question wrong in the software. I actually liked that. Made me feel like I was understanding the material. Good luck to all on there pursuit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, February 27, 2002

This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)
I am MCSE Windows 2000, MCSE Windows NT 4.0, MCSA, CNA, CCNA and CCA..so..I have some experience and some certifications.

Recently I read the Exam Cram Core four and New Riders MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams. In my opinion New Riders was a better product hands down. New Riders made a big difference in my certification process!

The presentation is concise and straight to the point. The books are a quick read with an abundance of graphics and screen shots to help you on your way.

The texts do the following for the reader; You get the theory, you get to do it, then you get to test your knowledge. You walk away confident, experienced and certified. What more could a person ask for?

I would also highly recommend the Transcender practice tests.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passing the test, June 30, 2001

MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams MCSE 4-in-1 (Exams 70-210, 70-215, 70-216 and 70-217) AUTHOR: Maione, Bixler, Barker, Harrision, Scrimger and Bersinic PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: This "book" is really a four-book set. Each exam is given a book of its own, complete with a CD to help you prepare for the Core Exams.

There are exam tips and notes set off in a box in the margins to make sure the reader will not miss them. The few illustrations are clear and the print is in a size that doesn't cause the reader to need a magnifier to read the words.

There are case studies, chapter summaries, key terms, apply your knowledge sections, review questions and, best of all, THE ANSWERS to the questions at the end of each chapter. Armed with the knowledge these books provide, you should pass your MCSE Windows 2000 core exam with flying colors

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor, February 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)
I've now completed 70-210, 70-215, 70-216 and 70-217 (I'm also MCSE NT).Unfortunately, the 70-217 book was almost poor to an extreme, though the others weren't so bad. A number of topics quizzed in the exam were simply not covered in the book.
Hands-on experience is always a good idea. However, with these books in hand, it's absolutely essential.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just the facts Ma'am., October 4, 2002
By
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)
I have passed four certifications and read 2 text books for each one. So I would just like to say- For God's sake don't buy this book! I have completed the book on 70-215. I gave this book one star because it may contain all the facts. However, this book has been written in the dryest most uninteresting way possible. The facts are not presented in a way that will help you in real life or to pass the exam. I think that there may be one sentence out of the 700 pages that may have been written by a human instead of a computer. If you like reading dictionaries, this book is for you. This book has no glossary of terms, then has terms in review questions that are not in the index.

I think the database computer that wrote this book totally lost sight of the fact that this book is supposed to help you learn the subject matter, not test you on it.

I will stick with Sybex and Osborne from now on. The Passport books are also excellent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete. Use this training kit + help + Resource Kit, December 31, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)
These books are great only for exam directions. I read the Windows 2000 Network Infrastruture, and there is lacking some important info. The tests ask for some info that is not present on the book. If you buy this book, be prepared to use oftenly W2K help and Resource Kit to get the complete information. After a few chapters, I think it's more productive to jump all "theorical" pages and do only the exercices, looking for info on other information sources. I'm MCP on Proxy Server, and have studied using an IDG book. There's all info I need there. New Riders loose time on step-by-steps, and give no technical background. I think I spent my money.

This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Exams (70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217) (Hardcover)
I have passed four certifications and have read a couple text books for each one. For God's Sake! Don't buy the book on 70-215.
They have managed to turn an interesting subject matter into one of the dryest, fact only, boring subject matters ever. If you want to live forever, read this whole book (like I did), and you will think you have. I think there was one sentence in the whole book that didn't sound like it was written by a computer.

The one star rating is because this book does contain all the facts. However, these facts are not presented in a way that will help in real life, or help you pass the exam.

I have found the books from Sybex and Osborne to be good text books, then B-4 you take your certification test read one of the Passport books.

I hope I saved you some money.
