4.0 out of 5 stars Technically pretty good, but very bossy November 12, 2013

Basically, you need Windows Internet Explorer to do business transactions with, e. g., certain car insurance companies. If you are not using Internet Explorer from Microsoft when you go to these web sites, they will tell you they can't do business with you. So, that makes recent Windows some kind of a must have for your pc.

If you object to becoming part of their cloud for, say, privacy reasons, and you manage to install Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 using the old-fashioned Windows 7 local, non-cloud password, that will work. But Microsoft recently decreed that you must use the Microsoft cloud name/password to log in to the apps on your computer. That is my idea of invasion of privacy, although lots of people think that going around with all kinds of dissimilar name and password pairs in your mind is perfectly all right, and doesn't constitute an imposition and needless clutter. (This "decree" at the moment appears to strike Intel DN2800 desktop machines that use this OEM DVD, and not machines that downloaded the Windows 8.1 update after installing Windows 8 from a DVD. Which implies that, either this DVD has malware on it, or there is a problem with Windows 8.1 defender on this DVD.)

So, what exactly is Windows 8.1 minus cloud and useless apps? Why, Windows 7 of course. And, Windows 7 is the preferred operating system for using Intel atom graphics drivers, something which Windows 8.1 does not tolerate at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked like a charm December 20, 2013

Probably the easiest Windows install I've ever done, and I've been installing Windows since 3.0. I was able to get this running on a Mac no less (running on Oracle Virtual Box). The new GUI takes some getting used to, though, but only a day.

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy to install and use OS October 13, 2014
By Sourdo
Verified Purchase
I bought this OS for my laptop to upgrade from XP. For an older laptop (2006) the installation was the easiest Windows install I've ever done, and I've done quite a few installations.

As for use I find Windows 8.1 to be a fine OS, not hard to use at all. It took me a half day to figure things out. Overall things are simpler, such as, from the desktop or Metro, go to Device Manager in two mouse clicks. Outstanding!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great price, great system August 29, 2014

Great price, great system, almost had a problem installing it on my netbook because netbook resolution is too low for win 8 (800x600) but a couple of you tube videos showed me how to increase the netbook resolution higher by going into system registration and it works just great, I almost had to send the oem back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Humm, another OS May 19, 2014
Verified Purchase
Well, I got this OS because of Microsoft making it difficult to keep XP Pro.
I'm keeping my XP Pro because it is more stable then anything they put out since 98 SE.
I found a program that is free and will keep my XP up to date.
This OS has a learning curve. After I got the "start" button back, it was a lot easier to learn.
Microsoft changed things that were unnecessary. It's ok to make the OS better and safer, but changing
the User Friendly side of the OS was a big mistake. I expect that MS will put out another fix. This one has the .1 added
maybe the next one will be .2. Better to issue a new version that keep upgrading.
You need at least 4 gig of ram to get it to run efficiently and more is recommended.
I'm glad the auto makers are not like MS. Every time the car stalls they would make you buy a new one.
Again! Not enough words.... Ok how about la la la la la.

It would not load over XP. I had to format the disk using the original XP load disk and stop the process right after the format completed and the transfer of files started, by turning off computer. 8.1 loaded fairly quickly. It even maintained by raid disks which I loaded originally with XP. 8.1 is very much different from XP but I'm slowly getting used to it.
