4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent-for a beginner
I thought this book was an excellent book for people who are just beginningto learn the bloated version of Windows 95- Windows 98. It is good at teaching the basic manuevers and how to do basi stuff, but it does not go into any depth about advanced functions. Overall, it wasn't bad. i reccomend it for beginner to lower intermediate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little dilute
The book lives up to its brag of providing information on Windows 98 that is comprehensible to people who are not techno-geeks. It also addresses the kinds of questions that can be urgent to newcomers (e.g., "Where did all my stuff go?" or "Why won't my computer respond?") However, the information is diluted with more chat and cuteness than is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little dilute, December 22, 1999
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies (Paperback)
The book lives up to its brag of providing information on Windows 98 that is comprehensible to people who are not techno-geeks. It also addresses the kinds of questions that can be urgent to newcomers (e.g., "Where did all my stuff go?" or "Why won't my computer respond?") However, the information is diluted with more chat and cuteness than is needed; I think twice as much information could have been provided in this number of pages (and at this price) without compromising understandability. Perhaps then there wouldn't have had to be so many recommendations to go get "More Windows 98 for Dummies" and other "Dummies" books. In short: I recommend it for anyone confronted with Windows 98 and feeling a little helpless about it (as I was after upgrading from Windows 3.1), but don't expect to become very proficient based upon this book alone.

Absolutely positively the best book yet for Windows 98 beginners. All the "stuff" you need to get you started. Guarantee that if you read and use this book you will have all the basics you need to move around and operate Window 98. Newer addition also includes Second Edition of Windows 98. A must for beginners especially. Pay real close attention to the tips they give you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great General Information!, January 3, 2001

Got my first computer (really) two weeks before Christmas. It has Windows 98 as the operating system. With the computer I received two books to help get me started. Win 98 for Dummies and The User Friendly Guide To Internet & Computer Terms. Both are great. Win 98 for Dummies takes you step by step thru the process of getting acquainted with a computer. The User Friendly Guide has a great dictionary along with tons of tips and articles about computers and the Internet. There's so much to know! If you need a great reference book, spend the money and get both of these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resource, December 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies (Paperback)
This book does a good job of giving some good basic information about Windows 98, although I did find errors. I bought this book and Patrick Neal's Windows 98:Exam 70-098 (Accelerated MCSE from McGraw-Hill.) Either book is quite readable, however, as an MCT, I'm recommending Neal's Windows 98 book to both my students and my friends because it's just as readable as this one, as well as giving a thorough, and basic explanation of Windows 98 functions in the scheme of computer networks. Both this book and Neals' can be read by the novice as well as the professional. I'm rcommending this book to my friends who want a more light-hearted read about Windows 98.

5.0 out of 5 stars Converted a Mac user to a PC user, easily, painlessly!, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies (Paperback)
Having owned six McIntosh computers, I was dreading the uncharted territory (for me) of the Windows OS. After buying a PC and staring at it for the weekend, I purchased Andy's book. Not only did it tell me everything I needed to know, it was lots of fun to read. His sense of humor walked me step-by-step through the most convoluted tasks (and there are many!) on my new computer. I highly recommend this book for both PC tyros and know-it-alls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful, accessible, and reassuring, November 18, 2000
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies (Paperback)
Last year I switched from Mac OS to Windows 98, and after reading the paltry scraps of instructional material that came with my expensive new system, I hurriedly bought a few books to supplement all that I didn't know. This homely book turned out to be the most useful one. It is full of good information, patiently and compassionately conveyed. The entire "Dummies" series is burdened with chaotic graphics (little dartboards, hand icons with strings tied around a finger, checkmarks, a little man) and a schoolbus look for the books' covers. If you like a book to look good on the shelf (always a nice plus) you will have to make a cover for this one. Highly recommended, though, for the neophyte Windows user.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a fair introduction but woefully inadequate., January 10, 1999
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies (Paperback)
While it does enable a beginner to get started in Windows98 it is hopelessly incomplete. It affords very little help when you run into trouble and is very poorly indexed. One could do with a little less cutesy language and a little more substance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply put---Excellent!, June 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies (Paperback)
Having little or no experience with Windows, this book was a Godsend for me. It clearly explains all of the features of Windows98 in terms that even this newbie could understand. While I'm far from mastering, this book makes navigating less fearsome, and I always keep it at arms length.
