About the Author

About the Author Greg Harvey, the author of more than 75 computer books (and he just keeps on going and going and going), has been training businesspeople in the use of DOS, Windows, and software applications programs, such as Word, Excel, WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, and dBASE, since 1983. He has written numerous training manuals, user guides, and books for business users of software. Harvey is the author of Excel 2000 For Windows For Dummies, 1-2-3 For Dummies, Internet Explorer 5 For Windows For Dummies Quick Reference, DOS For Dummies Quick Reference, and WordPerfect 9 For Windows For Dummies Quick Reference, all from IDG Books Worldwide, Inc. Greg Harvey is a product of the great American Midwest, born in the Chicagoland area in 1949 (thus his saying "I'm only as old as China," -- Red China, that is) in the dark ages of the Cold War before the age of McDonald's, MTV, and, certainly, personal computers. On the shores of Lake Michigan, he learned his letters and numbers and showed great promise in the world of academia. In 1966 (ah, the Sixties), he entered the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois where he was greatly influenced by such deep philosophers as Abbie Hoffman and Mahatma Gandhi. In the summer of 1968, he purchased his first pair of handmade sandals (from Glen, a hippie sandal maker who'd just returned from the Summer of Love in San Francisco). At the beginning of 1971 (January 12, in fact), Greg migrated West from Chicago to San Francisco (with flowers in his hair). Deciding it was high time to get a skill so that he could find a real job, he enrolled in the Drafting and Design program at Laney College in Oakland. After that, he spent nine years working over a hot drafting table. In 1981, following his engineering career, Greg went back to school at San Francisco State University, this time to earn his secondary teaching credential. Upon completion of his teacher training, he bought one of the very first IBM personal computers (with 16K and a single 160K floppy disk!) He still vividly remembers poring over the premier issue of PC World for every piece of information that could teach him how to make peace with his blankety, blankety personal computer. Greg worked in various software evaluation and training jobs. After a few more high-tech jobs in Silicon Valley, Greg turned to software training to get, as he put it, "the perspective of the poor schmoe at the end of the terminal." During the next three years, Greg trained a whole plethora of software programs to business users of all skill levels for several major independent software training companies in the San Francisco bay area. It was at this time that he started writing computer books. In the fall of 1986, he hooked up with Sybex, a local computer book publisher, for whom he wrote the computer training book, Mastering SuperCalc. And the rest, as they say, is history. Currently, he operates a multimedia company called Mind over Media, Inc. To get in touch with him, send your fan e-mail to gharvey@mindovermedia.com or visit the Mind over Media Web site at www.mindovermedia.com.

More About the Author

Greg Harvey has authored tons of computer books, the most recent being Excel Timesaving Techniques For Dummies and Roxio Easy Media Creator For Dummies, and the most popular being Excel 2003 For Dummies and Excel 2003 All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies. He started out training business users on how to use IBM personal computers and their attendant computer software in the rough and tumble days of DOS, WordStar, and Lotus 1-2-3 in the mid-80s of the last century. After working for a number of independent training firms, he went on to teach semester-long courses in spreadsheet and database management software at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
His love of teaching has translated into an equal love of writing. For Dummies books are, of course, his all-time favorites to write because they enable him to write to his favorite audience, the beginner. They also enable him to use humor (a key element to success in the training room) and, most delightful of all, to express an opinion or two about the subject matter at hand.
Greg received his doctorate degree in Humanities in Philosophy and Religion with a concentration in Asian Studies and Comparative Religion last May. Everyone is glad that Greg was finally able to get out of school before he retired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Windows 98 for Dummies Quick Referenced, May 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies Quick Reference (Plastic Comb)
An indispensable book for the beginning Window's user. The key is Quick Reference. The new users of the Window's Operating System (yes they are out there) find thick techno, computer terminology reference books boring and have trouble relating to them. I fell in love with this book the first time I needed to reference it because of it's no nonsence, plain english approach to shortcuts, changing icons, and customizing your destop to your needs and tastes, just to name a few. It gives the beginner a starting place without boring background history about how the operating system and how it works, how it began, in what year, etc. It also builds the confidence of the first time user so they can buy and use more detailed IDG Books with great ease. Now, with that being said, it also makes a great reference book for those of use who like to think of ourselves as advanced users of the Windows Operation System since we have used this system at home and college for 13 years. I was and am very impressed. I give this book as a present to all my friends, co-workers and family members who get or work on their first Windows based PC.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you have your Windows 98 manual, you won't need this book, October 15, 1999
This review is from: Windows 98 for Dummies Quick Reference (Plastic Comb)
I bought the quick reference looking for short-cuts or tips, and there aren't any in this book. There isn't anything in "Windows® 98 For Dummies® Quick Reference" that isn't already in your Windows® 98 manual. Save your money, or better yet, buy a magazine subscription to a PC magazine instead.
