Finally a book that gets the joke.  There are plenty (maybe a couple) of decent Advanced Programming Books for NT. The problem is that the little side bars (tips) are for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 programmers. I really believe Windows NT was developed to replace UNIX on the server... The workstation battle has long been won many moons ago by Microsoft... though who knows with the net and Java???. Finally a book recognizes this fact and has tips for UNIX programmers. The books is concise and insightful. Interstingly the UNIX side bars stress both the diferences and more importantly stresses the fact when UNIX and NT are the same. I found this great as it forced me to make analogies, which made NT more accessible and friendly. Having said all this, and being a hard core MS windows developer as well as a UNIX (and shudder VMS) developer, I must state that the book stands on it's own as an excellent NT programming book, no matter what your previous OS pedigree is. I found the examples were clear, but also forced the reader beyond the examples themselves, into broader design and development pathways that are relevant in the NT programming environment. Interestingly this book is also excellent as a book on NT concepts (even though the authors do not advertize it as such). It is not as detailed as other books that deal with NT as an OS, but definitely does the job for a serious developer. I think this a great first book or even a second or third book for  the serious programmer

I've seen people arguing whether this is a advanced or simple windows programming book. This is actually not an issue worth debating. This book is a piece of cake for windows gurus while much tougher for beginners.

For people who rated this book a one star complaining about the simplicity of it, I would say it's their problems not having a brief look at the contents before purchasing. It take only a couple of minutes for a real windows guru to tell whether a book is worth buying or not. My view is that the book is advanced for people who are new or relatively new to windows programming.

The author did a good job on the different aspects of windows programming. You, as a reader, will have a good knowledge on what the windows operating system can do in general and where you can get started when you want to do a specific job.

Keep in mind that the book is more concerned about what the window's operating system can do for u as a programmer. It's not a MFC book or DirectX multimedia programming book. Go find something else if you are just looking for a book concentrating on one specific area of windows programming.

I rate this book 5 star because i think this book is comprehensive and practical for most people. I don't rate it a one star complaining its "simplicity" because the only advanced windows programming "book" talking about every aspect of windows is MSDN which is impossible to put into one book.

Excellent book. The book is very focused and simple to follow. The examples are to the point and self explanatory. ActiveX , thread Synchronization etc. which were magical words now seems so simple. This I can say for all other topics also. The whole book follows a very nice flow. I am personally extremely impressed by the book and would like this opportunity to congratulate the two author for "A job very well done". I would also urge the authors to give us a book on DCOM as there is a vacuums of good book on this topic.

The book has an excellent ActiveX section. It shows tips to add practical features to your ActiveX controls that are absent from other books. The chapters illustrate the steps required to mark your own ActiveX controls as safe to initialize and script. These steps are required to surpress Internet Explorer's security warnings which can be confusing to your users.

I enjoyed this book very much, especially the section on ActiveX which was crystal clear. Can't wait for the next edition of the book when NT 5 hits!

The examples are in MFC. As a result, they are easily reusable and extensible.

Absolutely unbelievable. Take basic information from various "help" sources add, in some wizard generated code, and sell it as an advanced programming book. When I saw the reviews I was hopeful that this book would cover advanced networking, COM, and DB topics. This is beginner stuff with no insight whatsoever. To top it all off, there was no CD included with the book as advertised. Someone else must have returned it in haste as I am about to do.

The book mostly throws buzzwords and sample codes to you out of nothing. You cannot follow what the writer had in mind while he was sprinkling concepts so randomly.

I learned nothing from the book and would advise you not to get a copy
