Product Description

Product Description

With SBS 2011 you choose how CALs will be used based on how the server is to be accessed on a regular basis. There are two types of CALs to choose from: Device CALs or User CALs. These options give you the flexibility to choose the CAL type that best suits your business needs. Device CALsWith Device CALs, you acquire a CAL for every device-such as laptops, desktop computers, Pocket PCs and smartphones-that needs access to your server. With this option, any user can access the server on the licensed device. Device CALs might make the most economic and administrative sense for an organization that has multiple users for one device, such as shift workers. If you choose device CALs, then each device that accesses the SBS 2011 server will consume a CAL, and you can reallocate that CAL if you retire a device. User CALsWith User CALs, you acquire a CAL for individuals who are given named access to your server. Licensed users can access the server from any device. User CALs might make the most sense for an organization that has many roaming employees who need access to the corporate network from mobile devices or employees who use multiple devices to access the network. You can reallocate a user CAL if a reassignment is permanent. You can also temporarily reassign a user CAL if the user is on leave or the device is disabled.

From the Manufacturer

Window Server CALs

If the workstations in your organization are networked, you likely depend on network server software to perform certain functions, such as file and print sharing. To legally access this server software, a Client Access License, or CAL, may be required. A CAL is not a software product; rather, it is a license that gives a user the right to access the services of the server.

1. What is the difference between a Server license and a CAL? Why do I need both? The Server license gives the license holder the right to install and use the server software. the CAL grants the right for a device or user to access the server software. This offers license affordability to organizations of all sizes.

2. When do I need to aquire a CAL? A CAL is required when a user or device accesses or uses the server software. If access is through the Internet and is unauthenticated (as at a public website), a CAL is not required.

3. Are the five CALs that come with my purchase of Windows Server 2008 Standard edition per user or per device? the five CALs that come with the purchase of Windows Server 2008 Standard may be designated for either user or device. Any additional CALs acquired afterward are bought as either user or device CALs.

4. Can I use a device CAL and a user CAL to access the same server? Yes. Device and user CALs, as well as Remote Desktop Services device and user CALs, can be used to access the same server.

5. Is each CAL "tied" to a specific user or device? Yes. Cals must be assigned to specific users or devices. If a user leaves the company or a device is retired, the CAL can be reassigned.

6. I have some extra CALs from an older version that are not being used. Can I apply these to the servers running a newer version? No. CALs must be the same version as - or a more recent version of - the server software they are accessing.
