1.0 out of 5 stars Lots of words, LITTLE REAL HELP!, November 8, 2001

This review is from: Windows XP Home Edition Complete (Paperback)
The book appears to be weak in offering real help in configuring a Windows XP machine beyond the most obvious. For example, instead of offering step-by-step help on how to configure a Peer-to-Peer Network, the book goes into detail on how to plug in a NIC card and what the screens look like when its connected to a network, BUT does not go into any details about how to diagnose and configure the network connection by selecting the correct:
1. Protocol
2. Device configuration
3. Other details

for a Peer-to-Peer network with other machines running Windows 95, 98, 2000 and ME.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Intro Book, December 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows XP Home Edition Complete (Paperback)
I bought this book for my father, who is getting a new computer loaded with XP. He is NOT a computer whiz and doesn't really want to be. This is a book for someone who needs a handy printed reference on XP basics, peppered with some useful tips.
I looked at several of the other introductory books in the store and though some had friendly looking, brightly colored pages, none of them had the straightforward organization and succinct writing that this book offers; nor were they as comprehensive. It's very easy to find answers in this book!
If you can get past the unattractive newsprint paper and don't mind the relatively small illustrations, this book will provide enough detail to point a novice in the right direction and help him quickly accomplish tasks without getting bogged down in lengthy descriptions.

The book is good for overall planning of your system. If you are looking for the how-to for the more complex stuff its not the place.
