This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4 [With Contains Individual Exams, Links & Hyperlinks...] (Certification Study Guides) (Hardcover)
It's tooo simplistic. Very few things are explained well, especially TCP/IP and subnet masks. Although it's not a specific MCSE book, I found Mark Minasi's book on NT Networking (Server?), more thorough and understandable.I hope the CD is of more help in passing this test.

All the Osbourne-McGrawHill MCSE books are outstanding! I already had Microsoft product experience and was able to pass all the MCSE exams in 3 weeks with these books. They're great!

Having read 3 study guides for this exam,This one is ranked #2. A good choice... but I wouldn't try to pass the exam using only this one study guide.

TOO MANY ERRORS!!!!,

I found this book contained too many errors. Example is regedit not regedit32 is used to search the registry. Also the hyperlinks on the CD, if they worked at all, went to the wrong location. I received no response from the inquiries I posted at their web site. As a result of this experience, I will never purchase a Syngress Media book again. I found Newriders to be a better study guide.

This book has excellent resources to study for the Exam. But you still need to know you stuffs from experience or from knowing this things. You can't pass the exam just from studying one book, unless you already know your materials. Else, you need more than one book. Excellent source of book.

*Love the CD version that allowed me to study while I was working. Excellent coverage of all topics and much more. Make sure you understand trust relationships and get your hands on the Transcender. The preparation exams from this book are very disappointing.

Well organized and covers all the bases, not too deep,

The book is well organized, they teach the classes! Each section is clear and concise and includes good examples and screen shots. However, if you are looking for an in depth book, i.e. the behind the scene structured process of Netlogon within the NT domain, this is not it. It does explain all of the topics for you to get through the exam - you get the idea of how it works. If you get this book, get the matching Exam Cram Book or get Transcender. For those who want deep behind the scenes stuff, or do help desk network support, get the New Riders book ISBN 1562058673, it also has Enterprise and Workstation in the same volume. I compared sections of the books and the NewRiders gave a bit more on the topics. Good luck on the exam!

Is it really the cover of the book? The title says it's NT server 4.0 but the following text on the cover page says it's workstation 4.0! I think I'm confused here.

Very good for self-study manuals, lots of practice exams,

I am responsible for making sure three members of my team get their MCSE certification. We sent them to an ATEC course and also bought copies of the Workstation, Server and Enterprise books in this series. They were an excellent complement to the course and reinforced all of the major points that will be on the exam. There are many demo exams on the CD...although they are generally not the full package there are enough questions overall to test yourself.

I am planning on taking the MCSE NT Server 4 Exam later this year and purchase this book to prepare. I am only through the first 6 chapters, but so far I highly recommend it. The main thing I like is that the book has exam objectives at the beginning of each section and I've been able to study the sections for which I need the most help. It's obvious that the book is written by someone who really understands NT. There are a lot of practice questions in the book and on the disk. Also, there are sample exams from Transcender, etc... that give you a real feel for the real exam. I took (and failed) the exam once before. The questions that gave me the most trouble had to do with Trust relationships, especially which domain model to use in which situation---if you've taken the exam, you know what I mean! This book explained it very clearly and offered a couple of good tips to help on the exam that I wouldn't of thought of. I hope this helps me when I go back in the Fall. I would reommend this to my clients. |
