Up to O'Reilly's usual high standards,
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows NT TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
There are so many NT TCP books available that I decided to head for the mall and check them out at the B&N. I sat on the floor for most of the afternoon reading this and several competing titles, comparing coverage and checking several things that I already knew something about. This book was by far the best of the bunch. It's comprehensive, clearly written, full of useful information and tips, and completely devoid of fluff. In other words, a typical O'Reilly book. Buy this one. You won't regret it.

Essential Purchase,

If I could buy only five books to help me run my network, Windows Nt Tcp/Ip Network Administration would be near the top of that list. (Another would be Minasi's Mastering NT Server 4.) The advice is detailed and practical, the writing is down-to-earth, and it's obvious that the authors are deeply familiar with the protocols and applications they are writing about. I start with this book first when I have a TCP-IP question--even before TechNet, because Hunt and Thompson give you the real skinny, not the "company" answer. Also--and this is rare for technical titles--this book is carefully-edited and a pleasure to read.

The NT TCP/IP book I wish I'd gotten first,

This review is from: Windows NT TCP/IP Network Administration (Paperback)
I've bought almost a dozen books about Windows NT and TCP/IP for my job and to prepare for the MCSE TCP exam. This book is by far the best of them for overall coverage of TCP/IP in the NT environment. It's not sold as an exam prep book but I found it much more useful for exam prep than the several books I bought that supposedly were for that. Buy this one first. You probably won't need any others.

This is one fantastic book. I am studying for my MCSE at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC, and have found this volume indispensible. All of the O'Reilly books make great resources, but this one is particularly enlightening. The layout maps seemlessly with the MS learning materials and I've yet to find any conflicts. As a matter of fact, this book often clarifies what the official materials cloud. Congratulations on a job well done, and thank you!Sincerely, Sean Langan

Great explanation of how things work.,

Curious about how DNS, DHCP, WINS, IIS, etc. function in the TCP/IP environment? This is your book. A very good entry to midlevel book on how these things work within the protocol. If it's not detailed enough they provide direction to the appropriate RFCs - go have a party. I've bought a lot of TCP books and I wish I'd had this one earlier in the game. The troubleshooting chapter could have been bigger but now I'm nit picking.

You need this book if you manage an NT TCP/IP network,

I've been a UNIX admin for about ten years. Hunt's crab book has pretty much lived on my desk since it came out. I've got NT boxes sneaking in the back door now and needed to learn the NT TCP environment fast. This book gave me what I needed. It's going to end up living on my desk too.

Much better than the Microsoft Official Curriculm binders,

I bought this book to use as a reference when I got my first IT job. Areas of TCP/IP I found confusing from the Microsoft course I took were cleared up nicely from reading this book. I never found the need to buy a second TCP/IP book after reading this. You won't either.

The Real Source of Knwoledge,
By Shane King (Hunter Valley NSW Australia) - See all my reviews

I had studied other resources, including a training course to get my knowledge to a good standard. This book was the first that was really worth the effort. So much so, I am now looking for titles by the same Publisher to complete my MCSE

Concise, no fluff,

This book is an update of a previous UNIX-oriented book, in this case Craig Hunt's TCP/IP crab book. NT's TCP/IP tools and utilities can be confusing, and this book is a solid cure. It's particularly useful if you're not a veteran TCP/IP administrator, since it includes good coverage of the fundamentals.

best technical publication I've read,

You are GODS!! Your book Windows NT TCP/IP Network Administration is the best technical publication I've read. In paticular, your trouble shooting hint, "Users want solutions to their problems; they're not interested in speculative technobabble," is alone worth the cost of your book. In the future I will certainly make O'Reilly my first choice in technical publications.
