William R. Stanek (www.williamstanek.com) lived in Japan from 1985 to 1989. He traveled extensively and made many friends. While living in Japan, he spent much of his free time in Aomori (青森), Hachinohe (八戸), Misawa (三沢), and Tokyo (東京). He misses the wonderful food and drink and the good friends he made. He says, "On break, I traveled all over. On the island of Hokkaidô in Sapporo they have these wonderful Ice Festivals. My favorite thing about spring was the Cherry Blossom Festival. I'd take day trips to Aomori (青森) and Hachinohe (八戸) all the time. While in Japan, I studied kendo, the Japanese language, and Buddhism."

William lived in Europe from 1989 to 1991. During that time, he lived in Germany (mostly) and had several extended stays in the UK and Scotland including deployments to Mildenhall, UK. He spent his time in the UK travelling, and especially enjoyed his visits to Cambridge and London. He's been a football (soccer) fan since he was old enough to kick a ball and especially enjoyed being in Kaiserslautern for the championships. He misses the wonderful food and drink and the good friends he made. He says, "There's nothing like Fridays at the pub or Saturday market."

William lived in Hawaii from 1991 to 1996. During that time, he worked shift-work at Kunia Field Station, attended Hawaii Pacific University and University of Hawaii, and spent a lot of time at the beach. He and his wife's first child was born in Hawaii. William's writing career began in Hawaii when his first book, Electronic Publishing Unleashed, was published in 1995. The runaway success of that book and it's sequel, Web Publishing Unleashed, helped establish him as a leader and innovator in technical writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars On second thought, this is a good book, January 4, 2000
By
This review is from: Windows Nt Scripting Administrator's Guide (Paperback)
My previous review expressed reservations about this book because of the errors in a couple of chapters. I emailed Willaim Stanek about these and he quickly updated me with a full page of all the typos which were generated during production/copy editing. Having made all these changes to my copy I revist my review and add an extra level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Windows scripting, November 20, 2000
This review is from: Windows Nt Scripting Administrator's Guide (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource for any NT administrator who seeks to utilize windows scripts to maximize their productivity. The first six chapters covers windows scripting and the last five chapters provide a good overview of Visual Basic and Java Scripting. I, too, have found the errors mentioned in a previous review but the errors are obviously typos and don't detract from the value of the book. I sent the author an email and he responded promptly with a URL for online errata that covers all the errors that I have found. Before I found this book, I was using an odd assortment of Dos 6.0 scripting references that were clearly out of date and I didn't utilize Visual Basic scripting at all. Now I am producing much better scripts and am quite pleased with the return I have received on my time spent reading the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its not as good/sharp as Tim Hill's Win NT Shell Scripting, January 3, 2000
By
This review is from: Windows Nt Scripting Administrator's Guide (Paperback)
I have covered about a third of this book and so this review is not exhaustive. Having found Tim Hill's book at times too challenging or lacking basic explanation on some topics, I have found this book to be a good substitute. However its flawed with errors i.e. on redicting input and output - on appends etc. So if you are going to use this book, better have a substitute for cross checking some of the syntax and commands or manually try each command and example provided in the book and hopeful figure out the mistakes, if any...

So far, I have therefore found Stanek's book very useful and also erroneous in some instances.
