2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best on Optimization, but good on security, February 27, 1999
This review is from: Windows Nt Server 4: Security, Troubleshooting, and Optimization (Paperback)
The Security section is in depth and gives good detail. Personally, I bought this book for the Performance Tuning chapter of the Optimization section and was very disappointed. It's very short and was written in bullet points. Try this, try that, etc. Few explanations of why. Seems to me like the authors really don't know the subject.

I'd recommend the book Performance Tuning Microsoft Networks by Eric Wise instead, which I bought more recently if you are just looking for NT optimization info like I was. It gives more detailed explanations, is more up to date, and covers TCP/IP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Intro to 3 Topics, but book needs editing, June 7, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows Nt Server 4: Security, Troubleshooting, and Optimization (Paperback)
This is a good overall overview of the three major topics contained in the title. If you are interested in learning the basics, this is a good book for you.

The book rambles on through lots of topics, all sorta related. As a result, you can easily read a section or two. The troubleshooting section is good, but pretty straightforward. The intro section on how much security and pluses and minuses of different types of firewalls is also good. Also good is the presentation of the various US government D, C, and B levels and the site preparation handbook.

The big problem is that there are too many typos. It is clear that this book could have benefitted from another rewrite to clarify some of the sentence constructions and things like a grammar check to take care of some bogus sentences.

Despite the editing problems, this is still an excellent book, but one that aims more at beginning concepts and ideas than advice for those trying to offset a hacker's approach into NT.
