Although this is an old game, it's really nice to captain a submarine, run as silently as you can, and maneuver to get a better shot or out of an enemy torpedoe's way.

Depending on your mission performance, you can upgrade your boat, with a quieter propeller for instance, or even your personnel, eg with better trained sonar operators. You can even disable your staff and generate the sonar analyses, firing solutions, etc., yourself. The game mechanics is quite realistic. Ocean temperature, your sub's depth, and of course its speed have different effects on the different sonars you have. The Soviet subs are difficult to detect. Enemy helicopters are skilled in searching for you. Your cruise missiles can be shot down by SAMs. Even the opening and flooding of torpedo tubes generate distinct sounds that could be picked up by your opponent. It takes a long time to reload your torpedoe tubes, which can get you into trouble. In fact, your missiles, torpedoes, and mines are sufficiently well simulated to be used not only for their explicit functions but also for deceiving your opponents, masking your sub's noise, or scouting for enemies when you cannot. The campaign videos are kinda funny--for instance, even if you were to score a perfect in a mission, your commander might still find excuses to berate you.

The gameplay can be really slow, however, so this isn't suitable for getting a quick adrenaline rush unless you've customized your own mission and can get started right in the middle of a fight.
