5.0 out of 5 stars If you have XP, this beats buying a new computer. November 26, 2013
By AZFlyer

I have a 6 year old Dell with a quad core processor and 3 Gig of RAM. With the demise of XP coming up in April, I had to come up with a solution. I require a supported operating system for work. My alternatives were to buy a new computer (with Win8), or upgrade the old XP machine with a new OS. I picked this Win7 OS because it uses less resources than Win8 (which was actually a few bucks cheaper) and would be a better fit for an older machine. I was right. This is just the right solution for extending the life of an older computer. Win7 runs on my old system just as fast as the old XP OS and the user interface is intuitive and very easy to grasp if you're coming from XP or Vista. Another plus is that Win7 supports Office 2003, which I already own. Win8 doesn't. That saved a couple hundred bucks.

Installation was very simple. Insert the DVD and follow the instructions on the screen. There is an option in the custom install where you do not have to format the hard drive. The bonus here is that all of your data and settings from XP are saved and stored in a folder called Windows.old. While I would strongly recommend backing up all data before you start (just in case), you won't have to restore all of your data back from the external drive. It's all still there on your hard drive. Very convenient.

The installation process took about an hour. Then you have to download all of the updates and patches for the last several years. This took me around 3 hrs. on a high speed connection and involves several reboots. Once the updates are complete, you're ready to go!

Overall I'm very happy with this OS. It has extended the life of my older machine and was several hundred dollars cheaper than buying a new one.

The 500Gb hard drive on my Dell XPS 420 died and I struggled with how to get the machine up and running again without too much expense. First, I knew I needed a new drive and since I have been running Carbonite (on-line/off-site backup) on this machine, I purchased a 1Tb SATA drive and replaced the failed drive. After reading a bunch of license notes on Microsoft's website and a bunch of user comments, I figured out that I could use the "System Builder" version of Windows 7, because I was essentially building a system (for me). The only downside to this version of Windows that I can tell is that it does not come with support. I suppose the support is me, since I am the system builder. The second issue could be a downside, but I don't see how, really. The "System Builder" version of Windows 7 is locked to the machine I installed it on, so I can't move it to a new machine. Here is the workaround , from what I have read. If you purchase any upgrade, you now have a movable, regular license. Regardless, I don't think I have ever moved a copy of Windows in all the years and machines I have managed. So, I turned on the machine and it said something about not being able to boot, of course. I opened the DVD drive and then hit F2 on the keyboard to re-try booting. Windows 7 began installing. It reboot a couple times and needed some inputs, but it was done in less than 2 hours. Now to try to recover all my pictures and movies from an on-line backup...

5.0 out of 5 stars Boot Camp it for MAC October 8, 2011
By Necrops
Platform for Display:PC Disc| Edition:Old Standard Packaging|Verified Purchase
I was looking for a cheap Windows 7 disc for Boot Camp so that I could play Star Wars: The Old Republic when it comes out. After starting up the Boot Camp program all I had to do was insert the disk and let it run. This is great for anyone looking to get Windows 7 OS for Boot Camp for a cheap price, though I still prefer OS X Lion to Window 7.

5.0 out of 5 stars System Builder is a cinch! May 1, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Disc| Edition:Old Standard Packaging|Verified Purchase
As I don't do rebuilds often, I was unsure what the "Builder Pack" actually was, but reading other reviews I figured I could do this fairly easy.

Gang, all the Builder Pack is, is a bare bones fully legal version of Windows 7 without any of the add-ons (think AV, AntiMalware, and any other imbedded software when you buy a fully built machine off the shelf or on line).

The build was easy, the windows updating took about 4 hours from start to finish, then I needed to load AV (I use AVAST because it is good and FREE), MS Office, ADAWARE, Spybot, Mozilla, Adobe, etc etc.

I think I will go this route for all my future builds and rebuilds, the price is right and there is no "junk" to get rid of when you get the machine home!

3.0 out of 5 stars Meets expectations December 10, 2011
Platform for Display:PC Disc| Edition:Old Standard Packaging|Verified Purchase
I was installing this as a second boot option on my Mac laptop, with expectation of light use. The install of Windows went smoothly, and the availability of a "compatibility option" was very useful. The installation of Apple drivers to complete the job had some problems, but that is not Microsoft's fault. Windows 7 is now running for me entirely adequately.

There is, however, one angle that bothers me. There appears to be a bewildering array of versions of Windows 7, and I naively purchased without being entirely clear about what "Home Premium (Full) Builder" meant in terms of what was in and what was out. One solution might be for Amazon to link to a review or to a Microsoft FAQ that explains all the options.
