Book Description

This title helps readers learn the functionality, benefits and implementation steps of Windows NT security. This survey of security options is written for the developer who must create effective NT security functions, and the administrator who needs to explain the use and advantages of security procedures. The book includes: descriptions of the fundamentals of NT security operations; explanations of the crucial administrative advantages of robust security; methods for automating administration; and a companion disk, with sample tools for managing NT security. This is a guide for developers experienced in building applications, but who have not yet found their way through the muddle of confusing NT security programming options. Developers learn how the Win32 APIs work, and how to directly manipulate security processes. Additionally, author Nik Okuntseff demonstrates how to develop C++ classes to encapsulate security functions, so developers can provide administrators and users with easy-to-use security operations. These classes automate many of the administrator functions that were neglected by Microsoft.

If you want to understand the details of how NT implements security or need to build security into an application this book has the right stuff. This is not an administrators book. It describes the low level implementation of security in Windows NT. Great stuff. For an practical admin book take a look at Windows NT Security Guide by Stephen Sutton.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for developers working with NT security, April 8, 1999
By
This review is from: Windows NT Security: Programming Easy-To-Use Security Options with 3.5 Disk (Paperback)
This book makes sense of the nightmare that is NT4.0 security. This book is for any developer who has to write applications that use NT security and finds the available documentation on MSDN incomprehensible.

In the first chapter of the book the author explains the NT security model and each of the major pieces including security identifiers, security descriptors, access tokens, and access control lists.

In the remaining chapters the author develops and documents a C++ class library that encapsulates the NT security functions. The class library by itself is worth the price of the book, as it makes using NT security easy. I highly recommend this book if you need to write secure software.
