5.0 out of 5 stars The best of all self-ed books I have read.
This book is written in a detail that makes it easier to understand the topic. Much better than other publishers' books. Fewer errors. I passed the test on the first attempt using this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Who do they get to write these things?
I only made it through the first two chapters before returning this book. The writers may have their MCSE's, but they sure don't have a sound, fundamental understanding of networking. I've been doing this for twelve years and the text, as far as I read it, had plenty of inconsistencies. I must conclude that at least the individual(s) responsible for the first 2 chapters...

2.0 out of 5 stars Who do they get to write these things?, May 30, 1998
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
I only made it through the first two chapters before returning this book. The writers may have their MCSE's, but they sure don't have a sound, fundamental understanding of networking. I've been doing this for twelve years and the text, as far as I read it, had plenty of inconsistencies. I must conclude that at least the individual(s) responsible for the first 2 chapters don't have much real-world experience. Are you interested in just passing the exams and being a "paper-MCSE" or being valuable to a real employer? If the former, then you'll be happy with this work. If the latter, then get the books from IDG.

1.0 out of 5 stars a completely irresponsible publication, February 11, 2000
By
Thomas Breit (Shoreline, WA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
You'd expect a book that sells itself specifically as an exam prep book to present information accurately. Unfortunately, this book is so full of inaccuracies and missing information that it's hard to imagine anyone successfully passing the exam based on the information in this book. One example: chapter 2 mentions hashing, and explains that it's used on FAT partitions, but doesn't describe the hashing algorithm. In the chapter summary, they say to expect a couple of hashing questions on the exam. In the review questions, they ask you to hash five file names, and when you turn to the answers in the back of the book, ALL FIVE are done wrong! A breathtaking example of ineptitude! On and on it rambles, with useless diagrams, missing information, skipping over important concepts and emphasizing unimportant ones. On the plus side, it's well written, and easy to follow. This is a book that cries for a proof-reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars This exam guide is JUST RIGHT, July 11, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
Ever bought study guides or "Unleashed" type books and found them to just meander through topics, with lots of pages wasted on topics you know that YOU shouldn't be wasting your time on? Well, I have seen or bought far too many of them before buying this one from Amazon.com. Every page counted, and no space was wasted. I was extremely pleased with it's excellent organization, readability, balance, and, of course, content. Scored an 833, and the questions I missed were covered in the book -- I just, uh, forgot them. There are a few small errors in the book, but when you start spotting them, you'll know you're getting ready to pass an exam. In addition to preparing me for the certification exam, troubleshooting information contained in the book has saved my 11-person IT staff hundreds of hours administrating an NT network with 400 workstations. If there's any question in your mind as to which book to buy first to pass the NT Server exam, consider it answered. Spend any extra money on Exam Cram, and you WILL be a Microsoft Certified Professional. Good luck!

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of broken links in the "Interactive Study Section", November 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
There is an Interactive Self Study Section which comes with the CD-ROM. The idea is good but it is not "Interactive" at all. You suppose to click a correct answer from the question and it will link you to the next one. However, I find it hard to believe that many times, I had been linked to some pages that have nothing to do with the questions itself at all. They should check it before published that book. I paid good money for a "good book", not a "lost in space" game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hits most topics tested., June 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
This book does a good job of hitting most of the tested topics. However, like the Sybex guide, some objectives lack depth.

Questions at end of chapters are not exam like, but do a good job of testing your understanding of each chapter. A good guide to estimate if your studying is working.

Toss the CD... and use the net to get sample tests.

Would buy it again. Similar to the Sybex study guide. (I've read both).

3.0 out of 5 stars It is helpful, but a lot of mistakes. Bugs in CD-ROM, November 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
I read through the book. For the NT user like me(did not touch NT administration before), it is helpful. But I found several errors in Self Test Answers. The CD-ROM is the worst part of the book. Links are not proper, I can not finish any single self test on CD-ROM.

2.0 out of 5 stars Real World Experience?, August 6, 1998
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
The author calls the HP print server "Direct-Jet". This is not a typo, but a clear sign of lack of experience, or at least lack of attention to detail required of a writer of a book such as this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Some mistakes but it is the best book I have seen, July 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
The book is well structured and the self-tests at the end of the chapters are very good. About 80% of the questions I had on the 70-67 exam (scored over 900) were either from the self tests or the Transcender test (comes on the CD).

5.0 out of 5 stars This is all you need, June 30, 1998
This review is from: MCSE Windows NT Server 4.0 Study Guide (Exam 70-67) (Hardcover)
I initially bought the server version for my exam and I passed. what made the book so good is the fact that during the exam, I was not faced with any question I had never encountered before. The five I missed were purely my fault, these promted me go for this workstation version for the preparation for my exam which I equally passed. Although there are few non correlation between the CD and the book itself, ability to discover them reinforced my knowledge which I hope the publisher will correct in the later version. Once again, this is all you need!!!!
