No Depth At All!,
By Pete (Indy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows 2000 Server System Administration Handbook (Paperback)
I bought this book based off of the reviews I've seen at this site by readers. After reading this book, I am totally disappointed. The type was extremely large (to increase the page count) and the content BARELY scrathed even the surface of most of the new concepts. This book would be ideal for users who've never shared a folder before, or have never worked in an admin position (all kinds of elementary info on how to "communicate" with co-workers...aka "filler" material). If you're in this category, then this book would be ideal for you. If you're familiar with NT 4 and want to look under the hood to see the new features and how they work, save your money.

You'll need this if you plan on Installing 2000 Server,
By James Hildebrand (Tampa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows 2000 Server System Administration Handbook (Paperback)
This is an excellent overall handbook on installing and configuring 2000 server. There plenty on Active Directory, especially in how to transition the NT file/folder structure. Also provided a much better understanding of groups/accounts/user policies than the beta doc on these subjects. Definitely recommend.

Use this book to install and configure Windows 2000 Server,
By Brad Stewart (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows 2000 Server System Administration Handbook (Paperback)
I have been administering a fairly large NT network for some time, and I was very excited by the prospect of migrating to Windows 2000. In particular, I was eager to implement Windows' new security protocols as well as to start using Active Directory. Before I began the installation, I bought this book to help me with some of the new features, and hopefully avoid time-consuming mistakes during configuration. Well, I got even more than I bargained for with this book. The team of admins. who wrote this obviously spen countless hours setting up and breaking down 2000 Server, and they've done an incredible job of conveying their experience in this book. I was particulary impressed by the their ability to identify the more problematic or difficult topics and then go into greater detail or provide examples and exercises. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for a major Windows 2000 rollout.

All talk with little action,
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 2000 Server System Administration Handbook (Paperback)
I have worked with NT for about 4 years. I bought this book because it had many reviews and most of them where good. I figured the couple of bad reviews where people who just like to complain. I buy many books and like most of them. But this book was the biggest waste of money I have come across. This book is definately for beginners who want to setup Users and Groups. It talks about what Windows 2000 Server can do, but shows very little about how to do it. I agree with the earlier review, WHERE'S THE BEEF? Don't waste your money.

An Overview, not a how to guide,

If you are thinking of buying this book as a "How to Setup Win2k Server" manual, think again. The authors do a very good job in demystifing Active directory, and kind of gloss over everything else. Is AD an important part of Win2k? Do bears live in the woods? Yes it is important, but you still have to deal with TCP/IP and security too. Fortunately for the publishers, and us, you can also buy a Win2K stup book, Security book, etc, etc. Which one do you need?

Where's the beef?,
This review is from: Windows 2000 Server System Administration Handbook (Paperback)
This book has some very good information, but, does not convey information adequate to supply a system administrator with the information necessary to run a network. It appears that that was the intent of the book, and I think the writers missed the mark.As examples, the backup utility is described. Unfortunately, the creation and maintenance of media pools is not discussed. One cannot use backup effectively (maybe not at all) unless the media pools and media are created and managed in advance of performing a backup. As a second example, the group policy discussion tempts you about creating an install package for software but never shows you how. This book will be one that I will use after exhausting other more reliable sources of information when I want an alternative view of Windows 2000 Server architecture and administration. Not a keeper.

Right on Target,

My company has been serving as a beta site for Win2k, and I have been overseeing the insatllation and testing. I've been very pleased with with the quality and content of this book, mainly because the authors have really gotten under the hood of Windows, and they're able to clearly articulate what they found. I'm sure I'll be relying on this book even more when Windows hits the streets next month.

I thought it was excellent for experienced NT admins,
By JC Harman (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews

This is a lot of material for one book to cover well, but they have done a good job. I will help if you are already familiar with NT 4, especially in the area of permissions, since it assumes a certain amount of knowledge. Microsoft is really forcing MMC down your throat with 2000, so you need to read this book at a minimum to figure out what services have been moved under MMC.
