Window Server CALs

If the workstations in your organization are networked, you likely depend on network server software to perform certain functions, such as file and print sharing. To legally access this server software, a Client Access License, or CAL, may be required. A CAL is not a software product; rather, it is a license that gives a user the right to access the services of the server.

CAL FAQ

1. What is the difference between a Server license and a CAL? Why do I need both? The Server license gives the license holder the right to install and use the server software. the CAL grants the right for a device or user to access the server software. This offers license affordability to organizations of all sizes.

2. When do I need to aquire a CAL? A CAL is required when a user or device accesses or uses the server software. If access is through the Internet and is unauthenticated (as at a public website), a CAL is not required.

3. Are the five CALs that come with my purchase of Windows Server 2008 Standard edition per user or per device? the five CALs that come with the purchase of Windows Server 2008 Standard may be designated for either user or device. Any additional CALs acquired afterward are bought as either user or device CALs.

4. Can I use a device CAL and a user CAL to access the same server? Yes. Device and user CALs, as well as Remote Desktop Services device and user CALs, can be used to access the same server.

5. Is each CAL "tied" to a specific user or device? Yes. Cals must be assigned to specific users or devices. If a user leaves the company or a device is retired, the CAL can be reassigned.

6. I have some extra CALs from an older version that are not being used. Can I apply these to the servers running a newer version? No. CALs must be the same version as - or a more recent version of - the server software they are accessing.

5.0 out of 5 stars First time installer January 16, 2013
Verified Purchase
I have done helpdesk for a number of years, but I have never installed a Windows Server. The install went great, and the wizards easily guide you through setting up all the components of the server. The SBS2011 standard can support up to 75 users, and comes with Exchange 2010, Sharepoint, RWA, WSUS and many other components. I use SBS 2003 at another location, and the 2011 upgrade has quite a few advantages. You can control the server by the easier wizards, or rely on the typical Server Manager and Exchange Manager found in other server products.

The only drawback I will mention is the WSUS wizard configuration is very basic, and I have not bothered to find a way to look at and approve or decline specific updates.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great product for small businesses under 25-50 users December 26, 2012

Some people call it vaporware or vainshware or restrictedware or whatever but for my clients who don't need full blown versions of everything this has to offer they are absolutely thrilled. Adding CALs is the only annoyance so I won't rate the CALs very high.

1.0 out of 5 stars CALS are money bilkers October 21, 2013

MS made SBS perfectly, and it's plenty expensive enough...

Why they gotta bilk more money and hurt the SBS line...oh too late...they've ended SBS.

MS FAIL.

If you own SBS 2011, you will need to buy THESE if you have more than 5 users.
