This review is from: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit System Builder 1pk [Old Version] (DVD-ROM)
This is an OEM full-version of 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. It is licensed ONLY to be sold for use with NEW computer equipment (primarily for self-builders). You cannot upgrade an existing Vista computer with this pack unless you completely reformat your hard drive and re-install EVERYTHING. Win 7 has been reviewed in other areas, and I gave it four stars in a full review, but wanted to warn customers about being SURE they are purchasing what they expect with this edition.

I purchased this version of windows 7 to load into VM Fusion to run on my MacBook Pro. The installation was flawless and it has met all of my expectations. I am able to access and run all of the programs I used that require a windows OS.

I'm a technology geek, but I'm also careful with my upgrades. Admittedly, I do have a very powerful custom-built computer, but I was very surprised at how much faster and more reliable Windows 7 was over Vista 64 Bit.
I principally use my rig for gaming and videos / photos, but I occasionally use my rig to build software for my freelance clients (I'm currently unemployed though, so if anyone needs a .Net Web Developer in Co Springs, please get in touch!). The hassle of creating hardware profiles is now long gone and I have been delighted with the free virtual machine included with this version that provides a virtual windows XP mode that allows me to run IIS and other web development related software, without having their services drain my PC's resources when not in use. I can now just close down the VM, free the resources and get back to a high-speed rig for gaming! File transfers are now much faster and the overall feeling is an almost-instant response with just about all the features. I rarely get bugged by the User Account Control and even when it does ask for permission, I am glad that it works this way as there are stacks of security dangers these days. Games are much faster than Vista 64 Bit and so far, I have not found a game that refuses to work. I am an avid collector of games and many of them are very old, but they all seem to work perfectly well. I hope that Microsoft doesn't bloat this OS too much in the future with updates, it runs exactly the way I want right now and I am very pleased with it.

First this is a product for those who are building a new machine. If you cannot do this don't buy this version. But if you are looking for an OS that is stable, easy to work with and don't mind some changes to the way you used to get things done, then buy this. The install was a smooth as possible, it found ALL of my legacy hardware, didn't miss one of my external drives (6) and even found my antique laserjet IIp+ and viola' it was done. I have a plain Q9550 cpu on a Asus Motherboard with a 9800GT Vid card a run of the mill Sata hard drive as my primary. Its stable games well, does all of my productivity well and finally utilizes all of the hardware to its fullest extent. I was an XP fan for years but this one rocks. As before a bit of a learning curve it does do things a bit different but its is not nearly as difficult as it looks. Hugely customizable without having to hack your way into the thing. Worth the 175.00 I plunked down for it. My two cents worth I now return the soapbox to you.

For the person that posted "legit" packaging photo... I have same packaging and it was sealed when I received it and Microsoft had already blocked my product key stating somehow it's was on a SDK license and after activation period Windows went into a "not genuine" mode even though during the 1st 30 days... it was verified as a Genuine Windows product.
Nothing on the packaging states SDK only OEM... so be wary the OEM white box version. So unless your buying your Windows in a unopened retail package [ and that might not even be safe ]... beware of what you buy because Microsoft may have blocked the product key already. Best part is all Microsoft could do to rectify this, was to try to sell me license for $199, but never asked any info on who sold me the product or gave me the impression they were even interested in finding out who did... seems their interest was only about money for a new license. You'd think for a trillion dollar company they'd be able to label software sent out to software developers as SDK and not sell them OEM disks... so that the general public wouldn't get duped when buying these OEM products even though they real genuine discs with an authentic COA just with blocked product keys. Worst part I bought Windows 7 Ultimate because of the XP Mode hoping it would help with playing games that never worked on Vista [Vista games didn't seem to work Vista either, although Vista ran perfectly fine for me]only to find out it's just a very limited virtual drive meant to help run programs made specially for businesses that would have to be rewritten in order to work in Windows 7... and not like "dos mode" from prior versions of Windows... and the fact Windows 7 is actually running perfectly fine. My problem was compounded by my motherboard going bad shortly after installing Windows 7... which on an OEM version means you would have buy a new copy of Windows if you replace your MB [unless it's the same exact model, and that could be a problem] and my MB was no longer available... but it happened during the 1st 30 days, So besides replacing the MB, I decided to get a new HDD and re-installed Windows giving me an extended activation period in which I used fully to make sure I didn't need to re-install it again... that my 60 days on disputing with credit card had expired. Hope this helps someone...

I have an XP machine, a Vista laptop, and now have built a w7 unit. If you are one of the diehards holding out with your XP electronics, this is the real deal. Very stable, so far has run every game I've loaded except Call of duty 2. Gears of War has an easy fix once you find it, but was not a w7 problem. Loaded most all of my other programs too. Greeting Workshop, my fave, finally has refused to load after comimg all the way through win98!
Just a quick negative note that I believe has been dealt with here in reviews already, but it has a faulty product key entry system. Minor annoyance you really don't need out of the box. The fix was to bypass the product key entry process, and finish the install. Huh?! Who'd a thunk it? Go back to install again and take the upgrade fork in the road, instead of the initial new install. Didn't load any old.windows files either. You get to the key entry, and everything progresses from there, which led me to validate Windows as unrecognized. You fill in some numbers in more boxes and you are done. Don't you think they could hire hundreds of teenagers to sit in a giant room and just keep loading and reloading systems to make sure the first piece of the puzzle fit? I will finish this at a later time. For now, just buy it. At a $175 it is well worth it.

I was previously running the release candidate of Windows 7 and when it expired I decided to upgrade to Ultimate. It has been a breeze to use, with no compatibility issues aside from my sound card (which is not the programs fault). The feature set, speed, and usability make this the most efficient and well executed Windows since XP imo.

A must have if you are a windows OS user. Get the ultimate version, you will not be disappointed. I plan on telling everyone I know who uses windows. Also, gamers, you can play virtual any game with this OS, so it's time to make the move from XP.
