Book Description

October 1, 2008
Building on the interest generated by Sullivan s previous art and spirituality title, Windows into the Soul, this book focuses on the journey from darkness to light inherent in Lent. By using an easily accessible liturgical format, the book provides a pathway for those who walk from Ash Wednesday to the empty tomb of Easter.
Organized around holy days and Sundays in Lent, chapters begin with a prayer or poetic excerpt, followed by scripture for the day or week. A narrative then expands on the themes introduced by the prayer and scripture. Exercises following the narratives are simple mostly collage exercises using differing techniques and are accessible to a wide audience. Soul Questions, popular with readers, guide the spiritual exercise following the narrative, and Thoughts for the Journey, also popular with Windows readers, complete each chapter with suggestions for further reflection.

Review

"Michael Sullivan provides deep insight through Windows into the Light. He invites us on a journey of opening our souls to fresh air and sunlight and, like any great guide, he encourages us to "let the bad spirits go and usher in God's redeeming love through light." In particular, Michael skillfully uses the Lenten season of the Christian year to usher in fresh air and sunlight so that little by little--as Lent literally means slow movement--we face directly into all the unresolved areas of our lives. By doing so, this book bends us toward resurrection."

5.0 out of 5 stars An Invitation to Experience God anew, February 20, 2009

This review is from: Windows into the Light: A Lenten Journey of Stories and Art (Paperback)
Michael Sullivan invites the average Christian to be more contemplative, spiritual and an authentic self, for too often we are poor at journeys that require us to slow down. There is uncertainty, pain, or fear in the unknown journey. He inspires, guides, and with ease gives us tools to free our intellectual defenses of the clutter or burdens that hinder. By doing so, we open the window for opportunity to resolve areas in our life and psyche. The prayer is that we may find a deeper relationship with God in the journey, and feel hope resurrected in our lives--spiritually in our daily walk with God.

His gift of illustration and personal stories capture the heart as he teaches us movement from our left brain to our right. He employs art/collages and other activities as the creative medium but in a manner that anyone can do. It is evident that Michael is passionate about experiencing God in fresh, creative ways and wants to share with us in this celebration to find the Sacred once again.

Windows into the Light is deeply spiritual, yet also deeply psychological as it moves us through self-evaluation and reflection, grief, acceptance, affirmation, and celebration. What a wonderful companion during your Lenten devotions this season making this a spiritual inspiration which will be credible to your narrative throughout the Christian year.

In closing, what is striking about Michael and this book is his enthusiam for living and his value in finding the Holy in the ordinary. It is in this transformation that we grow both spiritually and as the vessel for which we were created to be.
