Son just purchased this laptop. Worked fine the first day. Today everything is slow. When he shuts down it freezes on a screen that says Preparing to Install Updates, Please do not Shut down. This is happening every time he tries to shut down. He has to hold the power key to shut down or remove the battery to force shut down. We don't know if this is Asus problem or Windows 7 Problem. Please help!
there can be multiple problems, given how unspecific you made your problem out to be... the most likely problems: viruses and the like very little free hard drive space (leave at least 10% of your hard drive empty for decent performance, the more empty space, the better it runs) physically loose RAM sticks too little RAM Too many programs running at the same time (background programs count, like messengers and the like, check your start up list and what programs normally run in the background) Overheating issues (check the temp of the computer, and if the vents are blocked, it may possibly be clogged up with dust, though thats uncommon for a moderately new computer less than a year or two old, if its overheating and there isnt any blockage of vents or anything inside, consider getting a cooling pad)
though from what i can tell, for the windows update freezing thing, is it truely frozen as in nothing on screen moves at all? or does it just never finish updating? it may just be because the update is a very large one, just a couple weeks ago, i had a update for windows take almost half an hour to properly install, and im running a decently powerful gaming desktop PC, quad core 3.0GHz with 8GB DDR3 RAM @1600MHz and a 7200RPM hard drive with more than 100GB free space... sometimes you just have to be patient with the windows updates, if it takes more than an hour to show any progress in updating, there is likely a problem in general.
on a side-note, DO NOT FORCE SHUTDOWN YOUR PC WHEN UPDATING WINDOWS UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, a friend of mine did that once and she was forced to factory reset her laptop since due to that mistake, she could not boot up windows, meaning she lost ALL of her data on her computer. I have also done that as well and have been forced to system restore to an earlier point, meaning all the data ive changed on the computer since that point was lost.
