5.0 out of 5 stars What are you talking about?!, January 19, 2005
This review is from: Winds of Change - Five Ancient Greek Myths (Animated) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Winds of Change, AKA Metamorphosis, is a Sanrio film. Here's what bcdb.com says about it: Five Greek myths are integrated into one storyline, set to music, unified by a small character named Wondermaker. First, he is Perseus cutting off the head of Medusa, then Actaeon being turned into a deer for spying on the Goddess Diana as she bathes; the god Mercury in a tale of envy; Orpheus descending into Hades for his love, Eurydice; and finally Phaeton wreaking havoc with the sun god's chariot.

As a child I used to watch this video over and over...I loved it. ( I think mine might have been the old Beta-max if that tells you my age ) . I have looked high and low for this video for my kids and finally found it on Amazon. The sellers price was considerably cheeper than anyone else and even included a DVD copy with the VHS. I am more than happy with it and cant thank him enough. now my kids can enjoy it as well. GREAT PURCHASE!

Winds of change is a wonderful cartoon! I do love the 5 mini stories in here, starting with the "Wondermaker" the main character of the five stories. He starts as Perseus against Medusa, then Actaeon being turned into a deer, then Mercury in the tale of envy, Orpheus decending into Hades and Phaeton wreaking havoc with the sun gods chariot. Definitily a entertaining, if not a bit dark, cartoon(Mind you this was made in 1979 and the music reflects that). Being only 82 minutes long it covers the basic myths very well. I do recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Winds of Change vhs animated video, February 6, 2010

This review is from: Winds of Change - Five Ancient Greek Myths (Animated) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The video had a couple of little glitches, considering it was a 25-year-old vhs tape that had been a rental tape it was in pretty good shape. It's not available in any other way as of this review. It is a retelling of some famous Greek Myths. In order to string together the stories they use a recurring character image as the lead in each segment, with a few minor changes in costume. Peter Ustinov narrates this english language version, adding a few wry jokes here and there. The animation was good for a 1970's piece. The music is a bit dated, it has an electronic disco sounding music track which may have been added to the english language version in the 1970's in order to be up to date with the times, but thankfully that techno music experiment era has ended long ago and classical scoring came back and still holds sway in most pictures today.

Be aware that there is brief nudity and violence in some of the stories, parents may not find it suitable for young children. Watch it first and decide. Not all animated films are for children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre & funny, with some slow bits., December 1, 2006

The thing that makes Winds of Change so great in my opinion is the narration coupled with the animation. The English-speaking narrator often sounds as if he's simply making up something clever to go along with the curious, sometimes surreal animation. When something strange occurs, the narrator tends to draw attention to it in what seems like a dry, humorous way. Some of the animation techniques used are very interesting - such as compositing stock footage with animation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to contemporary tribal legal struggles, October 18, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is not a video about Africa and it does not include Peter Ustinov. Instead it is a video about three contemporary Indian tribes, and the different ways law intersects with their struggles for survival. I highly recommend it for educators teaching in the area of Indian law, studies, or policy.
