Book Description

When they speak of our realm, Despina, it is a realm without Gods. It is said long ago they left our world, finding their influence too heavy handed, our deaths too many blamed upon their bidding. Before they departed, seven objects, chal'sei, were imbued with their essence and gifted to mortal men believed to be of righteous heart. Yet not all were so virtuous.
Ages past, the wars began. The skies blackened with the ashes of death. The very soil burned. Undying armies fed upon those who dared to stand against them. Life, was on the verge of irradiation.
In the end, just men imbued with the might of the departed Gods rose up and overcame the hungering darkness. With evil all but obliterated, a new area of peace has reigned for almost five thousand years, the revered chal'sei were lost to the world.
That is how the story goes. History after all, is at the mercy of those who write it. How would we know any different?
I believed it too once...until they came for me. Quickly I learned reality is never as pretty as the stories.
The Balance that has keep that ancient war in stalemate for countless centuries, has shifted. Some desperately seek to restore it. Others, seek to finally conclude it. And I...I fear the world will burn anew....and I will be to blame.
-Alina Sinalae

3.0 out of 5 stars A great read, but in dire need of editing! January 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Winds of Fate has all of the plot and multifaceted characters to make a stunning book. Set in a fictional world, the main character Alina discovers her past is a mystery while her future is fraught with danger and intrigue. The glaring problem is the poor editing! I have noted several small errors in many of the free Kindle books, but this book had a problem on almost every page (misspelled words, grammatical issues, sentence structure problems, etc.). Also, for some reason that might only be my Kindle, the text changed from regular black to grey throughout the book, leaving my eyes in a tragic state.

If you don't mind serious editing problems, this book is a solid five stars; otherwise, you will find the errors make the book an irritating three stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story! January 31, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the story very much. I read a lot of science fiction, and this story was unique. The characters were well fleshed out and realistic and the world in which they live was believable. There is tension between the characters, and mysteries and secrets they keep from themselves and each other. I look forward to the next installment.

Now, the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. As another reviewer stated, there were some editing issues. I do not know how this book was put into a digital edition, if it was a speech to text, but that is what it seemed like. There were places where words which are pronounced the same but spelled differently, and have different meanings, were used. For example, instead of the phrase "as if on cue,..." this book had "as if on queue,...". The words "where" and "wear" were used interchangeably. The same thing happened with "To" and "Too", and others, as well. As I was reading it, if I found it to not make sense, I read it phonetically, and it made perfect sense. Which really made me think that it was converted into a digital copy via speech to text. I also had some issues with the type fading to grey in some places, but that did not bother me much, I have seen that in other books, as well.

Overall, I REALLY liked the story. It came to a logical conclusion while still indicating that there was more to come.

UPDATE 8/31/12: My understanding is that the editing issues that were apparent when I first read and reviewed this book have been addressed. I see that it has a new cover as well. That moves this up to a five star rating for me.

I love this book. Be prepared, it is long, yet so worth it. I absolutely loved the story. It is filled with so much detail. It is well thought out and carried itself throughout. The characters are very good. I love the humor between the main characters. This novel is well written. A definite must read. Recommended! Looking forward to reading more of this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Needs Editing October 3, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The story was greatly crafted and kept the interest high. Looking forward to future installments to see where it heads. A very interesting world has been created and the characters keep the reader coming back for more.

This was a great book, just a little bit short of a finished product. If you ever want anyone to edit/proofread your books I'd be happy to. Numerous mistakes where the incorrect word was used (Tail for tale, etc.) or words repeated in a row within the same sentence (The the, or something like that). A lot of times an author can read what they mean instead of what they actually wrote, so if you'd like a free editor let me know.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, but please invest in a good editor! November 13, 2012
By Kelly
The story is interesting and doesn't follow the conventional plot lines, which was what made me continue reading it despite the horrific editing (or lack thereof). A spell-checker does not replace editing!! cleaver /= clever, ally =/ alley, etc, etc, etc. The grammar was also atrocious, and there were serious inconsistencies in the register of the characters, ranging from modern slang and cursing to formal "thee"s, "thou"s, and sentence structure. If the story hadn't been unique, I would have deleted it from my Kindle after the first chapter. In conclusion - with the help of a professional editor, this has the potential to be a great series.

4.0 out of 5 stars great story...(poor editing...) February 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an avid reader of fantasy, I truly appreciate it when an author can catch me off guard and weave a story that keeps me guessing at the next twist in the tale. Had the book not be in dire need of editing out spelling and grammatical errors, I would have given this five stars!

I am will definitely be purchasing the next book in this series, which is supposed to be released this year.

Born 1982, she was raised in Nebraska before trudging across the border into the great state of Iowa. After her successful exodus from college, she has spent the majority of her adult career in the cable industry. Geeked from birth, her writing covers fantasy, sci-fi and horror genres. Other than that, Macaela Reeves doesn't quite know what to put about herself here.
