5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
If you are rebuilding your old 289, Boss 302, 5.0HO, 351W, 347 stroker or any other Windsor based motor YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

The book is filled with valuable insight for building a street or purely strip motors. Disucssions of specs, supercharging, nitrous, roller cam conversion they are all included.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Overview of Available Aftermarket Combinations
This was a pretty good book as far as showing you how much power certain combinations make. Nothing in this book is terribly enlightening though if you're a regular reader of Hot Rod, Car Craft and other high-performance magazines. But it's fairly comprehensive. It does not get into engine theory much or the process of engine building/assembly at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money! Don't do what I did!, September 21, 2001
This review is from: Ford Windsor Small-Block Performance (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book to learn how to Swap a EFI 5.0 in my old '67 Mustang, because it has a whole chapter devoted to it. It told me nothing more than what I already learned before from the Windsor-Fox. I looked over the rest of the book at its information about engine rebuilding, and found it just as worthless. If you want to learn how to Swap an EFI 5.0, you'll just be wasting your money on this book, and if you are looking to rebuild your engine, this book is a waste of your time. There are so many better books that cover performance engine rebuilding out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Available.., February 21, 2006

I've purchased almost all Ford SB Windsor literature.. this particular book is absolutely the Best I got. I'm not saying it's perfect, but still is unique in a way that it illustrates how to carry out performance assemblies step by step.. such as building a 347 cid stroker, porting a head, installing force induction stuff, timing a cam or tuning a carb (I use EFI but it's good to know how). This book is not another performance parts catalog in the shape of a "book"! This one is very similar to what you can find on the tech pages of websites such as FordMuscle.com, CarCraft.com, MustangandFords.com

Before you read up further, this book doesnt cover the 351 Cleveland engine.

If you are about to rebuild and add performance to your small block Ford engine this book is ideal.Takes you through a history of fords small block V8's: 302/5.0L,351W/5.8L and EFI manifolds and performance upgrades.Note:It doesnt cover the 351C.This book is divided into sections with plenty of information and photos throughout.Even tells you about EFI engines and fitting into earlier model Fords. Also includes performance build ups and superchargers, turbocharging and nitrous.Definitely a comprehensive book thats easy to understand and good value too.

I give this book 4 stars as they are ALMOST as good as the "Cartech/S-A Design-workbench" books.

I'd love to have given this book 3 1/2 stars, but since I can't go that way, I'm rounding down.

The book has some great features, things like using the right parts for the job (cast crank? No way, he says). But this book has too, too much review of engine basics. There are some nice engine builds in the back, but there's a really big problem with them. The book is 12 years old!!!! What new parts are there? The Victor heads that he loves have been long over shadowed by newer heads, including from Edelbrock. No discussion of any value on aluminum engines, and the concept of high performance crate engines was nonexistent in 1999.

This is a pretty good bock, but lacking in a number of areas. If Mr. Martin were to produce a fresh 2011 revision, I'd look at it but be very inclined to buy it. If you're new to performance engines and to SBF, I'd give this book a very serious look. But most others can probably go elsewhere.

Overall good description as well as technique of how to tune a sb engine, but i think the pictures could be a lot better, instead of of black and white, use color and clearer pictures to illustrate a particular topic.
