Book Description

Well bred Virginia beauty Nora Seabrook longs for a life of excitement. She finds that and more when her father is appointed newest Federal judge in Key West. The day she arrives on the island paradise, Nora finds herself toppling from the gangway into the murky waters of Key West Harbor. She is rescued by the bold and brazen Jacob Proctor, owner of the island's most profitable ship wrecking company and the man her father accuses of the most wicked of sins. Jacob knows his is trouble from the moment he pulls the judge's daughter from the harbor. Nora Seabrook is the last woman he should be involved with. Plus a legacy of pain from his past prevents him from marrying any woman. But the stubborn Nora won't be sent away. Stowing on board the Dover Cloud, Nora travels with Jacob to a clandestine island where he becomes vulnerable to his enemies and the love that is destined to be theirs. Two cultures collide in this sexy and exciting romance.

"A fresh Caribbean breeze of a romance." Four stars... the Detroit Free Press.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A fresh historical romance that depicts a trade that often goes unmentioned. Salvaging wrecks takes on an exciting dimension courtesy of Ms. Thomason's pen. A little bit of sugar and a little bit of spice mix well to make Windswept' a worthwhile read." -- Amy Wilson, The Literary Times Magazine

"Cynthia Thomason once again brings readers a fast-paced story filled with characters so finely drawn they become a part of your life, as you share in their struggles and triumphs. Windswept' brings old Key West and its inhabitants to life, as Jacob and Nora battle greed, judgement, lies and tragedy to find a safe harbor for their love." -- DanaRae Pomeroy, CompuServe Romance Reviews

"Romance, intrigue and family secrets are elements that keep Windswept' so exciting. The characterizations are vivid, and the tense conflict keeps the reader alert. Ms. Thomason has a unique writing style that sparks the reader's emotions in every scene. Windswept' leaves me anxiously anticipating her next book." -- Rendezvous Magazine

3.0 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) Fun historical romance February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Nora Seabrook's landing at Key West is memorable, to say the least, as she's knocked off the gangplank and in need of saving by handsome ship captain Jacob Proctor. Salvaging cargo from wrecked ships is a profitable business, but there are some who intentionally lure unsuspecting captains into the dangerous reefs, and Jacob is suspect #1 - particularly with Nora's father, the new Federal judge. Nora isn't one to let a little parental disapproval discourage her, plus she's got to prove that Jacob's innocent, but things don't go according to plan. Nora finds herself at sea with Jacob and crew en route to an island in the Caribbean that holds some very big secrets from Jacob's past, secrets Jacob is determined to keep from Nora.

Like that's going to happen :D

This really was a lot of fun. Nora was more intelligent than many heroines you find in novels like this; intelligent, well-read and caring enough to start up a school for the local youngsters. I also liked the humor the author threw in with several of the secondary characters, starting with her family (loved flirtatious cousin Fanny!) and Theo, the bumbling suitor and house-guest who would never leave. Ever.

This book was originally published in 1999 by Zebra Books, and was well formatted for the most part, although there were a few oddities here and there in the Kindle edition. I had a sentence that ended in nowhere land, plus this showed up at least twice, "^P^P". Not quite sure what that was supposed to be. All in all an engaging romance when you're in the mood for a bit of brain candy on a rainy afternoon, and for those worried about the sexual content, I'd put it in the tamer category. There's one big sex scene, but it isn't overly explicit, otherwise just a few steamy kisses here and there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Historical Adventure March 22, 2000
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Windswept carries you away to the shipwrecking days of Old Key West where the heat rises faster between the main characters than from the tropical sun. Mix a strong sense of humor with a sexy hero, an independant heroine, and a dark family secret, and you've got a fast-paced winner. Cynthia Thomason delivers witty dialogue with ease, and I can't wait for her next book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical but cute February 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Didn't have high hopes for this one, but wasn't disappointed by it, either. Typical historical romance, with a heroine falling in love with a fellow whom her parents disapprove of, and a reluctant love interest whose inner demons keep him from pursuing a meaningful relationship. The inner demons turn out to be pretty cliche, as does the "independent" heroine archetype, but the writing and quick progression of events keep everything from getting too boring. I liked the setting--had never heard how integral salvaging was to the Key West economy. If you want a sweet story with some history, a little sex, and a lot of happenings, this one is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Seas Adventure March 17, 2000
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Finally, historical romance that satisfies a reader's every desire! This one has it all: a sulty setting, a compelling love story between a brooding but very sexy hero and a spunky, ever-optimistic heroine, historical details that are fascinating but never overwhelming, and an adventure that sweeps the reader along. Ms. Thomason's writing is exquisitely smooth, her characters and plot entirely original. Loved it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read March 1, 2012

Great plot. I enjoyed the book quite a bit. The hero was a bit confusing at times but it was explainable at the end. It wrapped up a little too quickly.

More About the Author

I'm Cynthia Thomason, writer of romance and some mystery. I am from America's heartland - born in Indiana and raised in Ohio. While working my way through college, I took a job at a radio and TV station and got hooked on journalism. For ten years I followed my dream of becoming a teacher. I taught high school English in Michigan, Ohio and Florida until my husband and I started an auction company. I became a licensed auctioneer and estate buyer which fed my love for uncovering unusual and oddball items. Luckily I haven't yet crossed the line between collector and hoarder! Recently my writer husband, Walter, and I sold our business. I miss the excitement of the auction but I can write full time now. I also have time to experiment with the new Kindle craze. I have some back list titles up now for purchase. I have won the HOLT Medallion Award, the Golden Quill and Readers' Choice Awards and I've been nominated several times for the prestigious Maggie Award. I love to write about American's small towns, similar to the one where I grew up in Summit County, Ohio. I like to travel the U.S. especially in the travel trailer we just bought so we can take Sparky, our adorable silky terrier mix. I have one son, also a writer. My favorite place to spend an afternoon is the mountains of North Carolina, but I haven't been to Ireland yet.
