Gom's parents, Stig the Woodcutter and Harga the Brown, produced a family of ten -- all but one the spit-and-image of tousled, yellow-haired Stig. The 10th and final child is Gom -- the runt of the litter, with his mother's wrinkled amber skin and snapping chestnut eyes. But on the very day of Gom's birth, his mother mysteriously disappears from Windy Mountain, leaving only her rune necklace as a parting token. Growing up on the mountain with just his father is hard for Gom. The villagers do not like his eccentric ways and he often wonders if there is more to life than being a simple woodcutter. Occasionally the mystifying rune necklace tingles against his chest, almost burning through to his skin, as if to call him away from the mountain to the grand adventure of discovering new worlds. Only later does Gom learn the truth about his mother, a truth that links him to her forever, and a truth that will impel him down a path to self-discovery and adventure.
