I worked with Patti in the 90's at a Central Coast winery. Her knowledge of wine and cooking make this a must for your kitchen library. Her paring wine with food as a food substance is essential! I miss her and her great sense of humor.

C'mon, Bruce, why be cagey about where you worked?

In September of 1982, a couple friends and I stumbled into the Bargetto Winery tasting room in Soquel, CA, on Monterrey Bay. Patti Ballard was behind the counter, and for most of the afternoon we were the only people in the place. It was great; my friends both worked for the company that ran HP's cafeterias and corporate dining rooms, so there really was a lot of give and take about the wines and what was in the book (needless to say, we each left with an inscribed copy).

30+ years later, it's still a go-to book for me. The recipes are basic, successful and good. Some are a bit dated; in particular the wine references seem archaic, but in the early 80's the California wine scene was a very different place. We don't buy "California Hearty Burgundy" anymore - it tends to be labeled as "red table wine" or with a varietal name, so finding that "French Colombard" might be nigh impossible. (www.examiner.com has a nice little article called "what-happened-to-french-colombard.")

Bottom line, however, is that there is lots of good to eat stuff in this book. Chicken Barbera and Lots of Cheese Lasagne are two of my favorites, but there are plenty more.

By the way, Bargetto's website still lists Patti Ballard as a "senior wine consultant (retired)." I'm glad she's still around.
