5.0 out of 5 stars Great desk calendar that offers wine reviews, tidbits, and quotes.
The calendar is printed in black and white. It is printed on recycled paper so it's a little gray rather than white pages. You can use the back sides of the calendar pages to recycle for your own notes as well. The pages are matte finish. The frame is year is royal blue, last years was purple.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fewer wine reviews, more (useless) facts
I have been a fan of Karen's calendars for 4 years now. I've noticed that as of the 2009 version, there are fewer wine suggestions, and more facts, figures and sayings (that are sometimes not very useful, interesting, nor entertaining). This was a primary avenue for me to discover new wines, and I was always excited to uncover the next page. The latest wine facts are...

The calendar is printed in black and white. It is printed on recycled paper so it's a little gray rather than white pages. You can use the back sides of the calendar pages to recycle for your own notes as well. The pages are matte finish. The frame is year is royal blue, last years was purple.

Each day has a fact about wine, varietals, a quote from someone famous about wine, suggested food and wine pairings, specific wine producers, and then trivia questions. It's quite cute and would be make a nice gift for the wine lover.

Nevertheless it is what it says it is. If you like Ms. MacNeil's style then I would suggest her book The Wine Bible for more authoritative wine knowledge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wine trivia and food/wine pairings, quotes, it's all there., December 26, 2008

The calendar is printed in black and white. I had thought by the description it would be in color but it is not. It is printed on recycled paper so it's a little gray rather than white pages. You can use the back sides of the calendar pages to recycle for your own notes as well. The pages are matte finish.

Each day has a fact about wine, varietals, a quote from someone famous about wine, suggested food and wine pairings, specific wine producers, and then trivia questions. It's quite cute and would be make a nice gift for the wine lover.

However, if you can find a calendar that looks a little nicer than this one, I'd buy it instead. Nevertheless it is what it says it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fewer wine reviews, more (useless) facts, November 27, 2009
I have been a fan of Karen's calendars for 4 years now. I've noticed that as of the 2009 version, there are fewer wine suggestions, and more facts, figures and sayings (that are sometimes not very useful, interesting, nor entertaining). This was a primary avenue for me to discover new wines, and I was always excited to uncover the next page. The latest wine facts are not as interesting (sometimes downright boring), and seem to be written and compiled by someone else. I am disappointed, and wish the wine calendar would include more wine reviews. If this trend continues, this will be my last calendar.

This is a great gift for those that love to try out new wines. I couldn't have find a better Christmas gift for my brother-in-law. He's already reading through it for new wine trials.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent knowledge and recommendations, July 21, 2003
By
"kiwimuzo" (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This gal knows her stuff, and her passion for wine shines through every day. I have learned so much already, just from glancing at each page as I work - many of them make my mouth water! One of the best things is that she does not ever limit herself to one geographical area, and she seems to have a real fondness for New World wines (especially the excellent vintages from the USA, Australia and New Zealand), which bodes well for the future of these varieties. Another advantage is that she never talks down to the wine lover, be they novice or professional taster, and that's a rare quality.

If she does a 2004 calendar, I'll be first in line!
