Works like a charm!,

I've been on a long quest to get clear reception of my favorite radio station -- 60 miles away. I live in hilly, rural country, though I'm on one of those hills, which should help. The flexible dipole that came with my receiver wouldn't receive this station at all. I tried various "powered"(amplified) antennae that sit on the table -- loops, pyramids. One of them got me fuzzy reception, but that's it. I also tried a powered "bar-like" antenna mounted outdoors on the side of my house -- again with fuzzy reception. And then I tried a long (5-foot), spike-like antenna (quite expensive!); mounted on the best wall-location inside my garage, it worked reasonably well, though with some ever-present static. It was tolerable. Finally, I tried this Winegard HD-6010, post-mounted on the ceiling inside of my garage. Perfect! No static. I'm in heaven. I think powered antennae are just gimmicks -- amplified static. Go with basic physics and get yourself an omnidirectional like this one, appropriately located.

Showed up on time and in good condition. I was using a home made mast mounted dipole type antenna for my FM, and replaced it with this one. If your just looking for a inexpensive FM antenna this might be good for you. Some stations showed a very small improvement. But it was an improvement. I'm in a rural, (major city is 50 miles away) and have some hills to deal with. With city's in two opposite directions. This antenna is not as directional as a simple dipole, so some stations that were weak from the other direction are now acceptable. So, if your looking for a non directional antenna that is a little better then a dipole, and can be mast mounted, that doesn't cost a lot of money this might be a good choice. But don't expect any miracles.

We're about 80 miles from the main FM transmitters. We've been getting an indifferent signal on an in-house dipole. I finally found that Winegard was still making this turnstile antenna, so it saved me from having to try to put something together. The antenna is inexpensive, simple, moderate sized and effective. Where before we were getting a decidedly marginal signal, now we get a solid signal. No more background hiss or tuner hunt.

A good, relativlely omni-directional antenna that is fairly rugged, compact, and will outperform ANY indoor antenna (simple physics here folks). Get is mounted properly and you will have an excellent unit for HD Radio and FM or VHF/UHF. Mine shipped without the 75-300 ohm transformer, Winegard's fault, but Amazon credited my account for $5 which covered the cost of a Radio Shack transformer.

I have used many fm antennas over the years and they all work just about the same. Recently I have been trying to improve reception on a jazz station that is located almost 100 miles from my home with varying results. Even using a Magnum Dynalab MD-90 and a beam antenna, reception was spotty. I put this up several days ago expecting little if any improvement and it really surprised me. I can now get a decent signal from the distant station most of the time despite strong local interference. Since the antenna is the only thing that has changed in my setup, I can only assume this antenna made the difference. Build quality is very good for the price and it is hard to see how you could go wrong with this. Of course, every situation is different, but I hope it helps your reception.

Good Omnidirectional Antenna,
This review is from: Winegard HD-6010 HD FM Radio Antenna (Electronics)
This is a lightly-built antenna but works well for receiving FM stations from multiple directions without having to turn the antenna, as you would with a directional model such as the typical outdoor yagi antenna. Long-term survival may not be too good, but it's about 1/10 of the cost of a very solid commercial grade antenna of its type so I'm taking my chances with that. I can buy a few of these and still be money ahead. Main use is at radio stations, for receiving their Emergency Alert System assigned monitoring stations. Works well for that; if you are considering an outdoor antenna vs. an indoor antenna, I've never found an indoor antenna that works as well as a properly installed outdoor antenna for receiving distant stations reliably.

I live in the hills and put in a sound proof room. At best we could get one channel of reception. I shopped everywhere and found nothing. This antenna works and at a good price. I did have to buy a 100 ft. coaxiel cable. We put it in the attic and after some adjusting we got it just right. Lots of channels now come in crystal clear.

I bought and installed this antenna last week. Chose two day shipping and it arrived in one day. I installed this at my cabin located in the North Central Mountains of Pennsylvania. It's located in a valley along a river surrounding by some of the larger mountains in the state. I basically had no FM reception, sometimes on a clear day I could pull in one or two stations that were not very clear. On cloudy days nothing. After installing this antenna about 20ft off of the ground I had countless stations coming in, most of which were very clear. I'm definetly pleased with this purchase

Wasn't sure if this was going to help much in picking up some radio stations that were farther away because it is in a metal building. But it helped quite a bit. I can pick all of them up. some 90 miles away. Recommend

Must Have for Decent FM Reception,

This antenna is "cut" in a dual dipole length that is tuned specifically for the FM band. It's omni-directional (or close to being omni). It works like a charm! You might want to experiment whether you get better reception with vertical or horizontal polarization (orientation) of the antenna. Try to get the antenna up as high as possible.
If you want to get decent FM stereo reception you are going to need a well designed outdoor FM antenna. I live 65 miles from several FM transmitters that sit on top of a high mountain and for which I have direct line-of-sight reception. Degraded multi-path signals are not a problem at this listening site. With a good quality FM tuner (Yamaha T-85 built in 1986) and this well designed HD-6010 FM antenna the signals are nice and clear. The sound is amazing and very close to CD quality. If you live in a semi-rural area like I do, you might also want to consider getting a decent low noise preamp to boost the signal at the antenna mount. I'm using a Radio Shack High-Gain HDTV-FM amplifier (Model 15-321) with 30 db of max gain added at the antenna mount (i.e.., close to the FM antenna). It helps push a strong signal from the antenna through the 75 feet of coax to the FM tuner. |
