Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Hungary has 22 wine regions, and a once-proud tradition that had to be completely reinvented after 45 years of communism-during which time the entire structure of grape growing and wine production was altered beyond recognition. This fascinating reference details that readjustment, which continues to this day, and shows how it has developed through privatization, foreign investment, and the dedication of small producers who struggle to achieve quality standards despite a chronic lack of capital. More than 300 wine producers are featured, not only from the famous regions like Tokaj and Villany, where significant progress has been made, but also from the lesser-known regions that may yet have the potential to make world-class wines.

About the Author
Since retiring as a university lecturer on philosophy and politics, Alex Liddell now devotes himself to a keen interest in wine dating from his student days. His articles (mainly on wine travel) appear in journals world-wide, and he has already published books in this series on Port Wine Quintas of the Douro and Madeira. He lives in Oxfordshire.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive picture - if a snapshot, May 20, 2004
By A Customer
As Liddell himself says, the situation is changing and this is a snapshot, but an extremely informative one. This book is without parallel in english (and any other language?) and comprehensively surveys the vineyards of Hungary together with a lot of background on the grapes, the soil, the history, the traditions and the problems facing Hungary's wine makers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Difficult Language but AMAZING Appendices!, March 23, 2008
This is a stellar book on the most difficult of the major wine producing countries to study (up there with Italy and Greece). On key fact is that the Hungarian language is so difficult for English speakers to pronounce. Liddell is my hero for his pronunciation guide in the appendices as well as the other appendices showing production, exchange and conversion charts and more! Now when I read these texts I wish they all contained a pronunciation guide!

So a note to the publishers: please include a pronunciation chart in the next edition of Germany and Austria!
