Book Description

March 1996
Taking readers on a tour through the vineyards inland from Bordeaux, this book presents a history of wine development and production in each area, from Roman times to the present, thereby reconstructing the customs and way of life of south-west France. There are also sections with tips on wine-tasting, details of the different varieties grown, and advice on the food which best complements the wines. Paul and Jeanne Strang bought a house in south-west France in the 1960s, and have been researching the region's cooking and its wines ever since. The book is a companion volume to Jeanne Strang's "Goose Fat and Garlic", and was shortlisted for the Andre Simon Best Book of the Year Award.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

France's southwestern quarter features some of the country's most dramatic scenery--and this in a particularly scenery-rich land! The southwest also produces some excellent wine, a subject on which Strang is an authority. Thirty years' preparation stands behind this thorough guide to the region's wineries, which number more than 200. As he guides the reader over the byways of the delectable countryside, on his way to this winery and that, Strang offers a full discourse on the process of wine making and the history of the industry in the area. On each grower's product, he proffers very informed commentary, all in a smoothly flowing narrative that reads almost like a travelogue, brimming with as much passion as knowledge. The text is augmented with helpful maps. Brad Hooper --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
