First let's be real, this is a television drama so the pace is very slow. Out of say 1600 minutes of film is practically only 120 minutes of fighting scaterred throughout. That said it is truly a Martial Arts Movie Collector's must-have if only to see Gordon Liu perform the rarely seen Dragon Fist portion of Hung Ga. But rest assured that's not all! The combat version of Pa Gua Chuan is on display here as well as the title's Yong Chun (Wing Chun). Sammo Hung's son Sammy does an excellent job both acing and fighting. Now, for the other drawback. The subtitles are really quite bad. First if there are more than 2 lines written the yellow type gets lost in the picture. Second the translation of the honorary titles are just flat wrong in many places where "teacher" and "master" are translated as "Mr." and even in some places "Dr." Third, while I don't speak Cantonese, this leads me to suspect that so much of what is being said is also either wrongly or badly translated. Enough so that Tai Seng should issue an apology to the producers of the series. I understand that translators have to decide whether or not to translate the words or the meaning of what is being said but even my poor understanding of Cantonese caught some flat wrong translations in dialog. Yet for the eyes this is still going to be one of my "strongly reccommended" movies.

I purchased this set a while ago, but never got around to seeing it, as my wife thought it was just about Wing Chun and all marital arts, so we usually ended up with some other film. When my wife was out shopping for a few hours, I decided to watch it, and found that there was more to the movie than that.....if you can get your wife or gf to watch it with you, it has a decent story line, very good character development, love interests, and oh yeah, kung fu! I have to admit, it did start off a little "cheesy" and slow (like a cheap soap opera), but after a few discs, it tranformed into a great watch. It was great to see Yuen Biao again, especially in a Wing Chun film, as I remembered him from the movie, "The Prodigal Son", an older Wing Chun film, in which he also starred with Sammo Hung. I do have to say that the female roles where excellent as well, I have to especially point out the girl that played the character, "Bun"- she was great and every guy fell in love with her in the movie, and I'm sure most guys that watch the movie will as well. Final note, the show ended with an absolutely perfect ending! After it was all done, I sat back and was very satisfied with how they tied it all together.

This TV series is based on true characters but set in a completely different time of 1930s and sometimes looking more 1960s instead of 1870s which would have been the correct era since Leung Jan was born in 1826 and died in 1901. Even more strange is some of wardrobes are bang up to date current. The acting are also very contemporary and have very little relevent to what you expect from a period drama and you could be excuse from not realising you are watching a modern day soap opera.

This is an excellent series. Sammo Hung is in great form as a wu shu teacher who goes far the limits of teaching a martial art in order to help the son of a good friend realize his potential.

Good series and filmed well. My reason for giving 3 stars instead of 5 are:

Though title is Wing Chun, the series only contains about 25%, maybe even less, directly realted to Wing Chun or Martial Arts in general. The rest is like a soap opera drama. Though interesting series, if you are expecting all Martial Arts this is not for you.

Also, it is too long. Just goes on and on and on. They could have condensed this series into about half the length and it would have been much better.


Good sets and takes you back in time to 1920s China, though how historically accurate I do not know.

Again, would be a great series to watch if it was much shorter in length.

I have seen the first 5 episodes of the series, which is proving to be very good. The delivery was certainly prompt though I did have to pay the customs charge which was an extra expense!

Maybe, the customs charges can be included into the overall price when buying dvd's from the US.

One of the best kungfu series of the last years. Okay, they are not fighting all the time, but when they do - imagine Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung in their best! The father-son relationship (Yiuen Biao - Nicholas Tse) and friendship among the young characters are superbly balanced. And one of the best things is actual fight Sammo Hung x Sammy Hung - the son is following his father steps. Can recommend to all kungfu fans who are not just looking for the blood but for the excellent story and acting, too!
