Editorial Reviews

Kevin Burke from Pensacola, Florida March 19, 2000

Because there are no Wing Chun schools in my area, I rely on instructional tapes for my practice. I have bought other Wing Chun tapes from Randy Williams, Augustine Fong, and William Cheung, but this one has made the biggest impact on my training. This tape really does a good job explaining not only the details of technique, but also why the details matter in reality. Jason Lau keeps it interesting with his insightful analogies and beautiful scenery. And there are some very cool action scenes as well. A very nicely done tape. I will definitely buy his next one.

Product Description

For over three hundred years, Wing Chun has been one of the fastest and most effective martial arts in existence. A system better suited for the street than for the tournament ring, Wing Chun is elegant in its simplicity and awesome in its efficiency. As the only martial arts system developed by a woman, it provides a smaller, weaker practitioner with the skills to defeat a larger, stronger opponent. Grandmaster Jason Lau has perfected this system and has tested it in combat, both on city streets and on the field of war. In this instructional video, he explains the basic theories of Wing Chun and helps you to train them.

Sifu Lau came to America from Hong Kong and settled in Brooklyn, New York. It was there that he began to prove his skills on the streets by fighting the crime and gangs in his neighborhood.

His fierce reputation as a vigilante led him to be recruited by General Mitchell Werbell III for his counter terrorist training camp, SIONICS. As an instructor and operative for SIONICS, Sifu Lau adapted Wing Chun skills to the arena of warfare.

Sifu Lau has taught Wing Chun for over thirty years. In addition to teaching at his training academy, he also uses his skills to train the Fulton County (Atlanta) Sheriff's Special Emergency Response Teams.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT a Wing Chun Instructional \ Trainig Video, February 26, 2001
This review is from: Wing Chun Today by Jason Lau [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was very disappointed in this video as a Wing Chun training guide. It is more of a documentary \advert on Jason Lau and his excellent looking training facility. The video shows the first form but doesn't examine each move and its application in depth.

This video is not useful as a training guide for Wing Chun. Either attend Jason's school or another Wing Chun teacher. If you have no access to Wing Chun teachers, Wong Shun Leung's video 'Wing Chun - Science of infighting' or Leung Ting's 'Authentic Wing Tsun' are much more informative and useful to non wing chun practitioners wishing to learn the Sil Lim Tau.

I am in no way trying to detract from Mr Lau's excellent reputation and skill in Wing Chun. I feel that previuos reviews have mislead me, not Mr Lau's video or organization. As a video it is relatively well produced and shows off Mr Lau's school, which is the best looking Martial Arts training facility I have ever seen.

Only buy this video if you are interested in studying with Mr Lau or only want a 'rough' idea of what Wing Chun entails ( or collect all Wing Chun material like me ). Don't buy this if you want to learn the Sil Lim Tau and apply it.

For reference I am a Wing Chun student of many years. I have studied Randy Williams Wing Chun Close Combat System and Wong Shun Leungs Wing Chun. I have an extensive collection of Wing Chun books and videos, from many different Wing Chun lineages.

1.0 out of 5 stars false reviews, April 12, 2002

This review is from: Wing Chun Today by Jason Lau [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Anyone interested in this tape, please read this review: I was a student of Jason Lau for years. Every favorable review I have read of this tape was written by a student of Sifu Lau. Trust me, I recognize most of the names, even some of them who say, "I look forward to meeting or training with Mr Lau" are actually students that he got to write favorable reviews. I myself have been asked by Sifu LAu to do similair things in the past. I know this man's ego, and trust me, all you are going to get is a documentary on him and his school. I just find it humorous that the students who write these great reviews posing as if they have never met Mr Lau actually post their names for people like me to see and recognize. Notice that some of the great reviews are fom NY and Fla. He has branch schools in both states. Hmmmm. Take it for what it is worth, but the only names that I don't recognize and that are not Jason Lau students post terrible reviews of this tape.

1.0 out of 5 stars What is this?????, September 6, 2000

This review is from: Wing Chun Today by Jason Lau [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The video is way too short for an instructional tape, barely 30 minutes, and covers only the very basics of the basics in Wing Chun. While the basics of the basics are important, but I felt that this video was more of a self promotional tape than anything else. It have very limited value except to a new student or someone who wants to know the bare basics. And what up with the military uniforms and the caps?!? Reading some of the past reviews, I can't help but wonder who are these reviewers, friends or students? It was entertaining at first, but it soon go downhill afterward. It promise a lots in the beginning but couldn't deliver at the end! And the students in the video don't seem to be having fun. (Learning is fun!) Its sure not worth the $29.95 price tag!! I would rather spend me money on a good action's movie for two (w/popcorn & soda). (From the Director: ... also an excellent training source for the more advanced practitioner....) Get lost Wayne brothers! Now, that's Funny!! The next video also look promising!? I can't wait...;-(
